Bowl & Blend is your new main squeeze

This Cooly joint has more than you can Poké stick at!

Do you go weak at the knees at the mere mention of a poké bowl, acai bowl, smoothie or juice? Yep, we do too because besides tasting redonkulously good, they also kinda make us feel like Kayla Itsines because we’re sure this is what the fit and fabulous folk eat and drink, like, every day. We know we’re not alone here, so let’s talk about newcomer Bowl & Blend. Situated in effortlessly cool Coolangatta, we don’t care if you live in Coomera because the great southern trek is worth it for a healthy Hawaiian hit of this calibre.

After recently relocating from the big smoke (aka Sydney CBD), award-winning restaurateur Kim Udomdej opted for a sea change – and thank God for that! With a vision to give us Coasties high-quality, organic, ethically sourced and reasonably priced eats, Bowl & Blend was born. We’re talking hand-picked local ingredients here which not only give her cred for sourcing from her own backyard but seriously elevate the flavour.

This coastal juice bar looks the part with fitting tropical accents and a modern bohemian interior. One can never go wrong with a bit of boho so we fully support this styling choice, which is complimented beautifully by the breathtaking ocean backdrop.

The Salty Squid Poké Bowl has the locals lining up and we concur, because anything involving squid is always on our radar. The Miss Piggy Poké Bowl certainly gives it a run for its money in the popularity stakes, and not because we all have fond memories of The Muppets, but because it is downright delish.

Or, perhaps you’re channelling some acai and of course you are – we all are. All.the.time. Bowl and Blend’s classic Acai Bowl feeds the eyes as much as the stomach and gives us everything we could ever want from our superfood-infused fave. If you’re looking for that Insta-Acai bowl, this is THE place. Each acai bowl is meticulously loaded with fresh fruits, edible flowers galore and cute little frozen fruits in the shape of butterflies, making it a tough decision to eat or just admire.

Moving on to the smoothie selection, the Green Hydrate provides the pick-me-up you’re craving, or for a post-workout (or not) fix, the Blueberry Power with banana, pumpkin seeds, protein powder, cardamon and milk (if you feel that way inclined) hits all the right notes. Fun fact: this crowd fave has recently undergone an upgrade, using almonds and hemp meal instead of nut butter for a nuttier, creamier flavour and texture. Genius!

Juice junkies will love that they can freestyle with their order, as Kim will blend whatever floats your boat. Or, if you’d prefer to colour within the lines and stick to something tried and tested, may we recommend the Detox Juice….especially on a Monday because Sunday sessions are still a vibe. Jam-packed with beetroot, carrot, apple, lemon and ginger, you’ll feel fresh as a daisy.

Or if you want something of the latte variety, order yourself a Turmeric, Matcha or Beetroot Latte because damn, these things look so pretty and we simply must order all of them.

Whether you’re a health enthusiast or just a good ‘ole fashioned taste enthusiast (we’re both – depending on how much grape juice we’ve sampled the night before…), pay Bowl & Blend a visit. You can thank us later.

7 refreshing local smoothie & juice bars

Nectar juices (Image: © 2020 Inside Gold Coast)
Nectar juices (Image: © 2020 Inside Gold Coast)

We all feel like we’ve done right by our bods when we forgo the coffee (on that rare occasion) and instead order a nutrient-rich smoothie or freshly prepped juice. I mean surely that undoes any damage inflicted by the 4 cocktails and bottle of sav we sank on the weekend, no?! With this in mind, we’ve compiled a list of seven of the best local smoothie and juice bars on the Coast serving up consistently delicious, refreshing and super healthy sips.

Bonus points if you visit them in your gym gear!

Nobbys Shack
When The Shack Superfood Café closed, we wept. Then along came Nobbys Shack…and we were whole again with their plethora of divine juices and smoothies. Mums and dads, this is the perfect option if you have the ankle biters in tow, as the playground is one helluva good babysitter. We’re swapping tequila slammers for an immunity juice shot with lemon, orange, ginger and turmeric. Instead of causing a headache, this will cure it!

Quench Juice Bar
Whether you’re in the market for a protein shake after the gym or a refreshing juice or smoothie, Quench Juice Bar has the goods. We’re ordering the Quench Colada and we need not explain why. With pineapple, banana and coconut gelato, you’ll get the taste sans the hangover. And coz Rona is still, well, everywhere, a Flu Breaker sounds like a good option with pineapple, lemon, ginger.
Where: Brickworks, Ferry Rd, Southport

Burleigh Village Green Grocer
Anyone who has enjoyed a little shop along James Street (which is everyone) would have by now tried one of Burleigh Village Green Grocer’s famous juices. And if not, what is even wrong with you?! The perfect fuel to start your day or provide an instant pick-me-up, whether you’re 4 or 104, you’ll be an instant superfan. Best thing is, you can construct your own juice. So get your ‘usual’ or mix it up if you’re feeling adventurous. And how good is the loaded fruit on top?!
Where: 2 James St, Burleigh Heads

Crave On Chevron
If you’re fanging for a pre or post-workout blend, Crave On Chevron has you covered with their gourmet milk-free smoothies and dang are they goooood. With 15-25g of protein, under 250 calories, low GI, low sugar, low fat, and infused with vitamins and minerals, you’ll be a lean, mean fitness machine in no time. There are also plant-based options available – winner!

Hook yourself up with a Pink Pitaya Smoothie with local banana, red dragon fruit (pitaya) and mango blended with fresh pineapple juice and coconut water. Or if juice is more your jam, get your green on with just that – a Green, packed with apple, celery, ginger, cucumber and kale.
Where: 467 Golden Four Dr, Tugun

Nectar Cabarita
Any excuse for a trip to Cabarita, and Nectar is where it’s at. In the most beautiful little space you ever did see (truly!), their healthy sips options are next level. Try the PB & A smoothie with spinach, avo, banana, dates, peanut butter, cacao, maple syrup and mylk (dairy-free milk) and tell us you’ve had better. Grab a bottle of the ultimate immunity elixir Sisuu Tonic while you’re there too!
Where: 34 Tweed Coast Rd, Cabarita Beach

Top Juice Pacific Fair
You’re giving your credit card a workout so you may as well make yourself feel like you’ve had one too and grab a protein shake from Top Juice. Protein Shake #4 with avocado, raw almond, milk, honey and whey protein goes down a treat and will give you energy for all that cardio (Pac Fair is big you know). The Minty Mix juice is also a popular choice, blending, you guessed it, mint, spinach, celery and apple. We are already feeling energised enough for more retail therapy!

The 11 best acai bowls on the Coast

Acai Bowl from Little Mermaid (image supplied)
Acai Bowl from Little Mermaid (image supplied)

After a long day in the surf, there is nothing we want more than an ice-cold acai bowl to cool down and refuel. I guess you could say it’s an acai for sore eyes – see what we did there?

Okay, but does anyone really remember life before acai? That delicious little berry from the Amazon has been a breakfast, lunch and snack staple for Gold Coasters for years and because we take our jobs very seriously, we’ve done the heavy lifting (see: eating) so that you can kick back and chow down. Don’t mind us while we add acai aficionado to our resumé.

Cardamom Pod
Maybe some of the most instagrammable bowls on the GC, Cardamom Pod’s bowls are truly a work of art. Loaded with colourful toppings and flavours like mango mousse, blue spirulina crème and a protein ball, the colourful mermaid tail finisher makes it feel almost too pretty to eat… Almost.

Rooftop of The Pink Hotel, Coolangatta (Image: © 2017 The Undercurrent)

Coolangatta is our southernmost suburb and it’s almost like stepping back in time for a taste of the good old Gold Coast, a little slower and sleepier (the way we like it) but with a sprinkle of some seriously epic eats for good measure – dreamy.

If you’re a fan of chill coastal vibes and pumping surf, where you can soak up the sunshine all-day long and hop from beach to bar as your heart desires then Cooly’s got your name written all over it. The laidback lifestyle is just one of the reasons why locals love this little beachside suburb, but we’ve found another 16 for when you want to go exploring.

Franc Jr’s
I’ts called the famous pizzeria for a reason, Franc Jr’s have gotten a rep for dishing up the best pizzas on the Gold Coast – maybe even Queensland. Big call, I know but IYKYK. Home of their signature Sicilian square pizza, pop down for takeaway or dine in with a bottle of pinot to wash down your pizza. Our pick is the red strip with a pickled grape salad on the side (sounds weird but trust the process) and a frozen marg if you fancy a tipple.

Pipi’s Restaurant
Cooly brought in the big guns with Brisbane hospitality mavens, the Gambaro Group bringing Pipi’s to life and it’s something Southern Gold Coasters have been waiting for. Pipi’s is the newest seaside sensation to call Cooly home and you best believe our tastebuds can’t get enough of it. Nothing to be crabby about with a Mediterranean-inspired menu – Chargrilled Mooloolaba King Prawns and Freemantle Octopus Carpaccio just a couple of the stars of the show. If you’re feeling boujee then treat yourself to a Kaviari Caviar Bump – served with a shot of Belvedere or glass of Tattinger.

Special mention to the cafe-style sequel to this suave new seafood nosher, Awaken Cafe. Situated underneath Pipi’s Awaken thos caffeine-slinging counterpart is giving girl-next-door (but, y’know, downstairs) in the very best way.

The award-winning salon and of course, their stylists, know their way around the locks and can we just say – they do one of the best blondes we’ve seen on the GC, and that’s no easy feat. The refined industrial feel is a pretty little paradise to sit back and relax while you’re pampered, which is exactly what you want when you’re investing hours in those tresses – t’s the crown you never take off, after all. No bad hair days here

Bar Evelyn
This place has been a hotspot for locals and visitors ever since it popped up on Marine Parade a couple of years ago. Cooly’s home of antipasto and pasta, you best believe we want a pizza that. Our picks? If you’re a seafood lover like us then the bug bucatini and pickled mussels with bottarga mayo, cucumber and dill are a must try. Sweeten the deal with their house-made tiramisu – do as the Italians do, we say – and one of their season sours.
