Sweet tooths, may we have your attention please. Imagine a world where teppanyaki and ice cream collide. No, you are not dreaming the sweetest of dreams and yes, this is actually A THING. Cooked up by the innovative Westfield Helensvale newbie, Slothie Teppanyaki Ice Cream, everything about this place will make you melt (ice cream pun intended), and you’re sure to love it un-cone-ditionally.
The story behind Slothie goes a little something like this. Whilst working in teppanyaki restaurants, GC couple Dorothy and Ken Chu found more and more diners asking the same question: “do you have ice cream?”.
Now, this started the cogs turning for Dorothy, as she reflected fondly upon a very popular Thai dessert called rolled ice cream or stir-fried ice cream. This involved smashing up the ingredients (sounds therapeutic to us) and mixing them with fresh milk on a freezing cold grill. And when Thai rolled ice cream was voted the number one dessert trend by the National Restaurant Association a lightbulb moment happened and Slothie Teppanyaki Ice Cream was born.
Entrusting Insitu Construction Group with the build, the Teppankaki kiosk setup is as cute as a button, incorporating soft, pastel hues reminiscent of a stunning Gold Coast sunset.
Watching as your order is prepared before your very eyes has all the fun feels of a normal teppanyaki experience, and the yum-factor to match. The setup is precisely what you’d envision, but switch out the hot grill for a cold one. The most decadent of ingredients are then chopped, sliced, diced, flattened and rolled to perfection and yes, it’s basically a DIY ice cream sans the heavy lifting.
Creating your very own teppanyaki ice cream is a four-step process. Firstly, choose your ice cream flavour. Then, add your mix-ins, select the toppings which toot your horn the most and finally, choose a sauce and whipped cream to (literally – once again) top it off. Drooling.
So you may be thinking, my kids are going to love this. And you are absolutely right! Not only will they love watching their creation come to life in front of them, Slothie Teppanyaki Ice Cream also runs kids workshops! Meaning not only will the kids handpick their toppings and flavours, but they also have the chance to make them with the trusty hand of Slothie team members. The perfect school holidays activity if you ask us.
But in the event you or the kids choose to forgo your right to freestyle, there are some incredible tried-and-true options to order. May we suggest the Nice To Mint You Waffle Taco with watermelon and mint chocolate slice smashed into mint cream and topped with toasted marshmallow, wafer stickers and lashings of milk chocolate.
Or maybe you’d prefer their Heart Melting Waffle Taco comprising of a vanilla base with strawberry and watermelon, all topped with strawberry, Sakura agar jelly balls and dried rose petals. Take our word for it, just looking at this creation will make your heart melt and your saliva escape your mouth.
Aaand don’t even get us started on their Gluten Free Waffle Pops! Offering both sweet and savoury options, (let’s be real, sweet trumps savoury), we suggest you opt for the Strawberry Waffle Pop with a dousing of delicious melted milk chocolate. These waffles are made on popsicle sticks, so getting your sweet fix on the go has never been easy. Because, let’s be honest, no one wants to get their hands dirty while downing food and dashing around the shops!
If you’re not in a sugar-induced coma yet (worth it BTW), you can also grab milkshakes and smoothies. The Ore-Oreo Milkshake is a popular choice with the classic vanilla ice cream base enhanced with the almighty Oreo and repeat after me, all hail the Oreo.
As Slothie opened during the Gold Coast busy Christmas school holidays, Dorothy and Ken delayed their official opening fanfare….until now! What this means is that if you buy any ice cream between Thursday 31st March and SUNDAE 3rd April, you’ll score a free waffle pop! If that doesn’t make you chant “I scream, you scream, we all scream ice cream” we don’t know what will.
So ditch the diet and start livin’ the cream at Slothie.

Ah, ice cream, you dreamy, heaven-sent creation, you. A treat that transcends all ages, there’s no denying it is one of – if not *the* – most iconic summer foods going. And here on the GC, our (usually) balmy climate is more suited than most to indulge in (several) scoops of creamy, churned ice cream or gelato goodness any old time we please…
Which is just as well, with all of the fabulous Gelaterias and frozen dessert purveyors gracing our city. It’s a near full-time job trying to keep tabs on them all… and, side note – new dream profession unlocked.
Let’s dig in (y’know, with one of those adorably tiny, and mildly impractical ice cream spoons) to some of the best spots to cool off with a cup, cone, or even a fully-loaded sundae –stacked, sprinkled and swirled within an inch of its life. Who’s hungry?!
Rosé Gelateria
Artisanal gelato slinger, Rosé Gelateria dons its telltale blush accents across two lush GC locations – Tedder Ave and Sanctuary Cove – which in itself, is a pretty decent clue as to the boujee, boutique style approach at these pretty-in-pink creameries. Besides a delicious assortment of crafted ice creams, they pour some fantastic coffee, including an affogato that’ll knock your socks and/or crocks off (hopefully not ‘and’, though). The signature Rose flavour, which comes sprinkled in petals, is a treat for the peepers and the palette. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a prettier gelato fix on the Coast!

Shiro Gelato & Snack
The concept of a friendly neighbourhood noshery specialising in snacks is one we can wholeheartedly get behind, and Shiro Gelato & Snack has your cravings covered with a Japanese take on all things to nibble, slurp, and lick. If it’s the lickable variety you’ve got your heart set on, house-made gelato flavours like Black Sesame, Matcha White Chocolate, Miso Caramel, and the vegan friendly Yuzu and Lemon flavour are all a common sight here. Take it to the next level and make it a Mochi-wrapped gelato scoop –served perfectly encased in the gelatinous Japanese dessert.

Gelato Messina
We’ve been living the ‘cream’ ever since Gelato Messina returned to our shores, now slinging their famed flavours out of Surfers’ slick new Paradise Centre precinct. The Messina name is one known for taking this gelato business seriously… everything from the dulce de leche to the gelato base – and even the chocolate – is made from scratch, down to their very own dairy farm to keep them plied with the creamiest jersey milk. There’s a reason that their… *checks notes* – literally every flavour – is what ice-cream dreams are made of.

Yo-Chi
With a line that stretches around the corner on the ‘reg (like, every single weekend) – locals have been going wild for Yo-Chi’s signature tangy and tantalising fro-yo goodness since the cult fave first swanned onto our scene in 2022. Now the proud owners of two GC locations in Broadbeach and Surfers, punters can get their probiotic fix in the most delicious of ways with a signature, soft serve style frozen yoghurt selection available on tap. The core range of year-round flavours are complemented by seasonal cameos, the majority of which are 98-percent fat-free.. and 100-percent mouth-watering.

The Gelato Shop
Cup, cone, or even sundaes – no matter your preferred method of consumption, Broadbeach’s The Gelato Shop has got you covered when it comes to all things chilled, sweet and creamy. The legendairy lineup of award-winning flavours includes the likes of Chunky Chocolate Cheesecake and Snickers gelato, a slew of fruit-based sorbets and decadent vegan options like Coffee Crunch or Peanut Butter. For an all-out indulgence, there’s locally made Warm Cookies & Gelato, Waffles and an array of fully stacked Sundaes.

La Macelleria
A spot that’s a stickler for tradition, La Macelleria is kitted out with all the best Italian gelato-making gear. Wrap your lips around stalwart flavours like Bacio and Salted Caramel, gelato shakes and out-of-this-world affogato – for those who prefer their desserts to come with a kick. One taste, and your love for this place will be un-cone-ditional.

The Oxley 1823 Sub Station
Not only has the team at The Oxley brought us a gorg new Nobby Beach hangout spot, but they’re also keeping us cool with delicious gelato at the Sub Station. Along with juices and milkshakes that will def bring the boys to the yard, they’re dishing delicious gelato. Word to the wise, we highly recommend clocking early and ducking in for the $3 Happy Hour scoops. Surely the boss will understand.

Burleigh Gelato
Picture the scene: you find yourself in the southern end of town (wandering off of one of those world-class beaches, no doubt), when you’re hit with a hankering – not quite hunger – but you could most definitely eat. The answer is Burleigh Gelato! Now with a second location in Palm Beach, the array of flavours is enough to earn the affection of even the frostiest-at-heart. The cookie-inspired creations, such as M&M Cookie Dough gelato or Biscoff gelato are alone enough to get dessert fans swooning. They’re also handily available on major home delivery apps and open late — perfect for those late-night sugar cravings.

The hand-crafted, small-batch recipes include refreshing revelations like ANZAC Biscuit, Banana Honeycomb and Apple Crumble, all made fresh on-site. Got an ice cream connoisseur in your life? Their frozen cakes are a treat for the eyes and the tastebuds – perfect for every occasion, or ‘just because’ works too.

Tango Gelato
Palm Beach’s turquoise sensation, Tango Gelato, serves up sweet scoops daily out of its Pavilions Shopping Centre location. The icy creations include inventive combos like Ginger & Dark Chocolate, Strawberry Cookies & Cream and Blackberry Sorbet – so if you think you’ve ‘been there, licked that’ when it comes to ice cream flavours, we’d suggest you pay them a visit to have your mind blown immediately. They also offer delivery, so if you’re lucky enough to live nearby, you can always opt to have the the ‘mind blown’ come to you (in your jim-jams, obvi).

Ottimo
What do you have if you take yourself a devoted Italian and then send him to study a diploma from the Gelato University of Carpigiani in Italy? You have Davide, the owner of Ottimo, of course! Promising superior gelato and coffee – rest assured, whatever flavour you settle on taking from this premium iced-goods purveyor is going to be the goods — it’s all made fresh and on-site daily, after all. Stroll in after an afternoon on the beach and let him and his friendly staff scoop you happy. And their signature ‘Sicily’ flavour, made with Mandarin Custard with Pistachio and Almond Caramel, sure does just that.

Tamborine Mountain Gelato Co
Serving only the most authentic Italian gelato – the rainforest-studded surrounds of Tamborine’s mountainside community are the only reminder that you are, in fact, not strolling the streets of Sicily whilst sampling your delicious scoop of choice. At Tamborine Gelato, the iced goods are served old school – hidden behind the lids of a traditional Pozzetti gelato cabinet in the name of freshness. Seasonal, house-made flavours are rejigged every couple of days, with the chance to catch creamy creations like Mint Stracciatella, Banana Custard or Lemon Myrtle and Honey. They recently teamed up with Franquette to bring us ‘The Gelaffin’… a freshly baked cruffin loaded with small-batch gelato – aka the most glorious ice cream sandwich you’ve ever laid eyes upon. Officially our new favourite franken-food obsession for summer.

There are some things in life you never thought you’d see; a world taken down by a mystery virus, takeaway cocktails, Kanye running for president, the list is long.
The latest thing we can add is a Gold Coast addition, excitingly it is none other than hot ice cream.
The beloved dessert has crossed over to the warm side and is making all things winter that little bit more bearable.
The idea sprung from Burleigh Heads ice creamery Tango Gelato, a firm favourite amongst Gold Coast locals for their delightful array of mouthwatering ice cream flavours and close proximity to Burleigh Hill, where all the best ice cream eating is done.
So what is hot ice cream you ask?
Basically the premise is that the crew at Tango Gelato take your favourite flavour of hand-crafted gelato or sorbet and make into a hot drink style situation.
The opportunities are endless, choose from flavours like Hot Mars Bar, Hot Salted Caramel and Nutella, Hot Honeycomb Crunch, Hot Choc Mint and many many more.
If you’ve not yet had the pleasure of visiting Tango Gelato, let us tell you, they have more exceptional flavours than you could possibly imagine and have even won Queensland Dairy Product awards for their unique flavour sensation, the Licorice Mint Gelati.
Sounds like the perfect treat to us.

The Gold Coast foodie scene has been a place of profound change and transitions in recent years. We may be bias, but we think our café culture is very much in line — if not surpassing — our southern neighbours.
And with it, we have variety: from gorgeous beachside espresso drop-ins to laid-back chic industrial spaces which effortlessly ooze coolness. We reckon anyone from the big cities that have visited in recent times has likely left feeling a tad jealous — so they should, right?!
The northern end of the Gold Coast has been no exception to this building momentum of late, with venues regularly setting the bar high with only the best coffee and premium café dishes. So, when it’s time to break the fast, and you find yourself at the northern end of town, we’ve kindly compiled a rundown of the best places, where we implore you to make that happen. Enjoy!
Funnybone Coffee
From the owner of cult coffee stop, Good Day Coffee in Tugun comes this reasonably new addition to the Helensvale circuit. Aesthetically from the outside, this open café space screams minimalistic eye-catching vibes that will make leaving this spot rather tricky, especially when the staples are yummy Acai Bowls, Coconut Porridge and Eggs Benedict of both the regular and vegan variety.

Daark Espresso
The ever-admired Chirn Park (just north of Southport) is a little hive of foodie goodness that the northern side of the Coast was certainly due. Daark Espresso sets the bar high, from its uber-friendly staff to its sumptuous breakfast menu littered with favourites like the dessert-for-breakfast Panna Cotta boasting peach, mango, & coconut with a crunchy granola & seasonal fruits. Ohh and make sure not to make plans for the rest of the day because their lunch menu will make you want to stay!

WavyBone
Chirn Park has gone and done it again with a café that looks like it has just waved goodbye and walked itself out of a Melbourne laneway; it hasn’t though, it’s just the ultra-vibrant WavyBone, of course! The Wavy B & E Roll is a winner and goes down a treat with a perfectly poured Blackboard Coffee, one of the Gold Coast’s original coffee roasteries. Throw into this mix a turntable forever pumping out sweet rhythms and a chance to grab yourself some dashing WavyBone branded apparel: we think you’ve likely found your next favourite breakfast hangout.

Anchor Bouy Café & Bar
The aptly named Anchor Bouy is where you are guaranteed some finely poured Elixir coffee and a great breakfast menu, all whilst you stare lovingly at the array of boats in the marina and wish to yourself you lived at Sanctuary Cove. One dish you MUST try is the Breakfast Bruschetta. It’s to die for with your choice of bacon or house smoked salmon, avocado, cherry tomatoes, poached eggs all served on top of lightly toasted sourdough and drizzled with hollandaise.

Substance Espresso
Can we just say, how good is a seasonal menu? It keeps things interesting and fresh in our eyes! And with that in mind, the team at Substance Espresso has their menu hinge on seasonality, with specials aplenty and the added acceptance that dessert for breakfast is a bonafide thing. Oh and to top it all off, the barista’s there accept nothing but consistently good coffee, which means the first drop of golden liquid is as good as the last. We’ll meet you there!

Bear Boy Espresso
Coffee is well and truly the ultimate focus at Bear Boy Espresso. Speciality blends coming from Market Lane in Melbourne are regularly featured with the added addition of pour-over and batch brew as well as your standard espresso-style coffees. Caffeine aside, the venue is a feast for the eyes and somehow more reminiscent of Northern Europe than Queensland. The menu brags some usual flavoursome suspects as well as a dedicated section to the little ones. We can’t go past their self-proclaimed ‘OG’ the Big Bear Benny. A crispy potato waffle, two poached pggs, house hollandaise with sautéed greens and your choice of garlic thyme mushroom, smoked bacon, pulled pork, or smoked salmon. The options are endless!

Cross + Feather
Situated on one of the forever-bustling little streets of Paradise Point, Cross + Feather dishes up all your favourites with quirky little spins. And because breakfast is for champions, the team at Cross + Feather generously serve it all day. We cannot recommend enough the Crossed Avo which includes fresh avocado, heritage tomatoes, Persian fetta, purple basil salsa verde, native dukkah, smoked green tea salt on a sprouted wheat sourdough. YUM!
