Wine not head to Currumbin’s Little Vine Room

You'll be very grape-ful for this wine bar.

When we hear the word “vine”, we are overcome with excitement and the reason is two-fold. Firstly, we can confirm that any sort of vine-vibed greenery gets a vigorous nod of approval from us. And secondly, our favourite thing in life a) grows on said vine and b) even rhymes with vine…and yep, you’re right here with us. So when there were whispers of Currumbin housing a new wine bar aptly called “Little Vine Room”, our heart-eyed emoji-mode was activated…and our enthusiasm was certainly not misplaced!

Now we’re not superficial, but let’s talk aesthetics first because this indoor/outdoor venue is a looker! Occupying an intimate space, she’s decked out in delicious deep green and apricot hues and is the stuff dreams are made of. There’s a show-stopping evergreen marble bar with sage green subway tiles underneath, lush arch cabinetry behind the bar, and a statement wall with tropical leaf wallpaper and overhanging vine-esk greenery (appropriate). Indoors seating features delicious green leather and gold-based stools, and twinning sets of suede velvet green stools along the indoor bar, and the indoor/outdoor bar serving windows. Throw in a funky cosy booth (#dibs) and some terrazzo floor tiles, and you’re in wine bar heaven.

It may be a dream come true for us, but it’s an actual dream-turned-reality for passionate (and downright lovely) owners Amanda Sawtell and Mark Newman. Their incredible vision and meticulous planning have culminated in a truly beautiful space, perfect for a girly catch-up, drinks with your other half, or a private function to remember. Enlisting Retail Collective to bring their interior concept to life and Tonic Projects to lead the build, Team Little Vine Room have produced a home run.

There are more key players to note here, including the talented Jayden Ross who was in charge of the food menu, and esteemed cocktail kween and local icon Breeana Erica curating the beverage list. So what can we expect to nom and sip and we honestly thought you’d never ask. With gourmet Toasties, Jaffles, Cheese and Charcuterie Plates, plus other delectable small bites, we’re sold. The Fungie Jaffle grabbed our attention, with mixed mushroom sautéed in champagne and cheesy béchamel, finished with parmigiano Reggiano. We’re also fangirling over the Chicken, Leek and Truffle Terrine with city larder’s chicken and crisp baguette… and our love affair with truffle just keeps on keeping on.

We can’t go past a good Cheese Plate because who can, and this one is loaded with Riverine Buffalo Blue from Victoria, sheep’s cheese Valdivieso Manchego from Spain, Cloth-Ashed Cheddar from Victoria, plus there’s a selection of cured meats by Salumi Australia. Now there’s only one thing that could make this better (W.I.N.E) and whattyaknow, there’s plenty of that. To accentuate the flavours of the cheeses, we’re partial to the La Crema Monterey Chardonnay from California, and the Nick Spencer Gundagai Light Dry Red from Gundagai in New South Wales. But wait, we just saw some cocktails being delivered to the next table and we are NOT leaving without a round of those!

First up we’ll have a Your Old Flame with 1800 Coconut Tequila, Sofi Blood Orange Aperitivo, fresh lime juice, and house made chilli syrup. Then an Espresso Martini with vodka, Kalua and fresh espresso topped with ‘LVR’ in cocoa powder… and actually, make that two rounds.

And just when you think this place can’t get any better, it does because the gorgeous Amanda will be introducing a special cocktail and toastie, with proceeds of each donated to their not-for-profit organisation, Love Thy Neighbour. Set up during the devastating recent floods, their mission is to help local communities in need and like we needed another drawcard but…wow.

So get on down to Little Vine Room, the Goldilocks of Gold Coast bars. Everything from the fit out, to the menu, to the infallible customer service, is ‘just right’.

SOMM is your new partner in wine

The world of wine and the talks around it can sometimes come off as a little showy and confusing for the everyday Australian. Yet our admiration for this fermented grape juice remains unaffected; enjoying a slurp of Shiraz over the BBQ or a slosh of Chardonnay by the beach are, by far, still some of our favourite pastimes. And this is where the real opportunity lies —bridging the gap from incredible wine and the people who make it to our thirsty glasses whilst sidestepping any swanky behaviour along the way.

Taking this ideal and running with it full steam ahead is the Gold Coast’s newly opened SOMM Wine Store in Nobby Beach.

Husband and wife duo Joe and Natalie are the masterminds behind SOMM, and both extend from families with long Italian Heritage. Joe, in particular, has worked in wine distribution for just shy of two decades, and although he has extensively travelled throughout Europe tasting all of the delectable wines — as you do when one is in Europe — he still knows and appreciates the good producers and emerging styles we have right here in our very own backyard.

Stepping inside the sustainably built shop space, you’ll discover sophisticated and minimalistic styling punctuated by rows of perfectly lined and colourful wine labels presenting boundless opportunities to escort your tastebuds far, far away. Browse a while, and you’ll find your favourite grape varieties — but with the likelihood of seeing some winemakers and regions you aren’t familiar with. And this is where it gets fun.

SOMM offers you the chance to discuss your tastes with their in-store experts; somebody will always be on hand to give you the low down. Expect conversations including “this producer’s winemaking style is like…”, or “this region makes fantastic wine because of their prevailing weather.” Really, these are some of the best conversations if you ask us!

The team want you to leave the store with a bottle — or two — of something you are going to love, and whether it’s something you’re familiar with or never even heard of before, it doesn’t matter one inch. The emphasis is to proudly showcase family-owned Australian winemakers with distinct styles, wines that you will genuinely enjoy drinking.

You will, however, find an array of European classics weaved throughout, alongside new-age orange wines and Pétillant Naturel (AKA Pét-Nat’s). If you’ve longed to give one of these a go, a little something left of centre, then this is your very chance to do so. Albeit with some friendly advice and guidance thrown in for good measure.

Dynamic and welcoming, whether you’re popping in on a weeknight for a little something to accompany dinner or looking for some stellar wines to go alongside a large family lunch: SOMM will cater for all tastes.

And for those with a curious outlook, you’ll be pleased to learn from 4pm on Saturdays the guys will be holding weekly tastings, where they’ll discuss and give you the chance to taste a selection of wines. Possibly the best ‘try before you buy’ we’ve ever heard of!

When it comes to wine growing and producing, whether you know it or not, Australia is up there in the world with some of the best. And although we might not have the legacy and history of our European cousins, we still knock out some fantastic drops!

Whether you’re a fan of Euro classics or enjoying wines from our very own Terra Australis, we think a well-rounded wine list, and therefore drinking experience, should be celebrated. So next time you feel like the wine selection should be just as good as the food, we’ve gone to great lengths to find the Gold Coast venues with great wine lists and cellars where you can sip to your heart’s content.

La Bella Cellar
If you haven’t come across this humble ode to all things Italian and delicious, then we suggest you go about booking yourself a table pronto. Here at La Bella Cellar, you have countless opportunities to do so with a carefully curated list displaying hard-to-find Italian regions and varietals. But if you feel like Australian wine is just as good — and it is — they have a clever section where you can experience the same grapes and styles but from good ol’ Straya.

Veggie scrumptiousness awaits at a new Ethiopian-based mecca

Zala's Place exterior (Image: © 2022 Inside Gold Coast)

Finding little hubs of gorgeous food and drink around the Gold Coast is a staple hobby of many of you out there these days. Little pockets of hard-working individuals who tirelessly create incredible food, often from scratch, for us to come along and savour. The newly opened Zala’s Place in Currumbin Waters is no exception to this rule; taking meat-free delectable dishes to an all-time high and rubbing off some seriously good vibes for those who decide to drop by.

The Traders Corner precinct on Currumbin Creek Road is fast becoming a go-to spot for all things delicious, and nestling in the back left-hand corner is Zala’s Place — entering the scene with a standout array of foods we know you are just going to love.

Heading up the kitchen is Zak Taylor, who has swapped fine-dining chef duties (ex Labart, Rick Shores) for an immersion into vegetable and plant-based delights — and for this, folks, we should be forever grateful.

The menu has strong roots within Ethiopian cuisine and uses traditional dishes and flavours to create exciting and tasty fare, such as their Split Pea Stew and Spiced Pumpkin Stew. The menu will revolve and slowly change in time to keep things interesting for those who cannot help but come back time after time.

Other hot items such as a Spiced Sweet Potato Roll look and taste just like it’s meat equivalent — if not better. Look, we’re not knocking the humble sausage roll, no, but you must give one of these a try!

Quick and easysalads are made fresh every day and are the perfect accompaniment to something heavier or, if you prefer, just to have simply on their own. A jam-packed Falafel Wrap is also an easy option if the abundant choices are a bit too much for you!

The folks behind the space want Zala’s to be enjoyed across the day and will ensure coffee fans are catered for with Elixir coffee beans delivered via a very unique and not often seen brew bar-style coffee machine. Meaning when the crowds turn up for their morning fix, amazing coffee can be knocked out at speed and without hiccup.

And should you feel like something sweet (because, why not), you’re spoilt with a selection of gluten and dairy-free slices and cakes such as their Teff Lamington and All Spice Orange Slice. Sidenote: Teff is an ancient grain indigenous to Ethiopia and is your next favourite superfood!

Currently, open six days a week, Zala’s caters for breakfast and lunch. Still, we hear a whisper they are looking forward to putting together opportunities to enjoy their food in the evenings also: watch this space.

An essential aspect of the space is community, and eats aside, you’ll also discover a small selection of locally made artisan goods such as hand-poured candles by Girls That Brunch and vegan made soaps from Little Loving Things, as well as others. Drop in for a bite, and you may just end up taking away a little something for yourself or a gift for that somebody special.

With a core choice of vegan dishes and a spattering of vegetarian options in there also, there’s no excuse not to enjoy the spoils of this Ethiopian-based mecca of veggie scrumptiousness.

When: Mon – Fri: 7am – 2pm, Sat: 7am – 12pm
