Burleigh’s Pottery lovers’ paradise.
Burleigh’s Pottery lovers’ paradise.
Calling all potters, ceramicists (say that after a few savs), pottery lovers, ceramics collectors, gift hunters and décor devotees. If you haven’t popped into The Potter’s Shop yet, in the words of Moloko; the time is now (what a banger). A community pottery shop selling works from 15 Gold Coast based creators, there’s more local handmade beauties here than you can poke a pottery wheel at.
This brilliant concept was cooked up by savvy duo Dani Parkin and Mel Cox. If these names sound familiar to the creative heads around town, that’s because this isn’t their first pottery-based rodeo. Founders of the hugely popular Firebird Studios offering a range of classes and courses from fun, beginners’ lessons to full 10 week learning courses, pottery is pretty much in their DNA.
Conversations with customers and local potters about where to sell their pottery (once they progressed beyond the ‘making for gifts’ stage and note to self; must befriend a potter), spurred Dani and Mel to expand their pottery empire. Providing a much-needed physical platform for potters to hock their work, it has acquired quite the loyal following. A true locals-supporting-locals initiative, everyone wins here, and we are so down for this kind of jam. Knowing that our hard ‘urn-ed’ moolah lands in the pockets of fellow Gold Coasters’ (rather than some huge cashed-up company’s till) is the icing on the cake…or the glaze on the pottery.
So let’s break down the other pros of this co-op type business. Firstly, it’s totally unique to our region, allowing different potters from different backgrounds to come together and sell their work alongside other well-known potters. Noice!
Secondly, we all gain access to the very best collection of one-off pottery and ceramics pieces, making our abodes sing and sending our visitors into a Googling frenzy (Visitor: “Omg I NEED that. Us: #don’tbother). There’s a story behind each potter and each piece of work adding to the appeal, plus there’s something downright spesh about physically seeing a piece of handmade pottery, rather than buying it blind off an online picture #truedat.
Thirdly, The Potter’s Shop is an amazing source of gift inspo, perfect for that friend who has everything and FML, buying for these mates is ‘Kiln me softly’ material. And finally, there is also a small assortment of pottery tools and clay for sale, with some Botz glazes available to order. We don’t actually know what these are but they sound pretty profesh, and the potting community is totally judging us right now #fair.
But wait there’s more coz we forgot to mention that the prices are very affordable, plus you can score a rock star park right out front.
So there you have it – reasons for days why The Potter’s Shop is totally ‘kiln’ it, and well worth a visit next time you’re Burleigh bound.
