The luxe new rooftop bar taking Surfers to new heights

Meet Sofi, the glam new Mediterranean-inspired bar.

Cocktails just taste better when you’re kicking back, sipping away perched atop your rightful throne (#yasqueen #orking), high above the rest of the world watching it go by #facts.

Which is why, whenever we hear whisperings of a new rooftop bar breezing into town like an enigmatic and glamorous distant European relative (y’know, the type you’re equally enchanted and intimated by), our anticipation immediately skyrockets.

We might even bust out our best high heels for the occasion, because the higher the better #amirite – unless you’re afraid of heights (or blisters) that is.

Enter Sofi (short for Sofia) our newly crowned Mediterranean goddess in the form of a rooftop bar and restaurant reigning over the heart of Surfers Paradise.

Sofi is one of those venues that has it all – classy, but still inviting.

Consider it your new destination that’s just as suited to laidback hangs as it is for lavish wining and dining.

Surrounded by olive trees, pops of terracotta and an abundance of whitewashed lounges to bask upon as the GC sun sinks low, the unmistakable Amalfi Coast inspired surrounds will act as your one-way ticket to Euro vacay vibes (no airfare required #win).

Sprawling over two luxe levels, you can either settle in and treat your tastebuds to a Mediterranean holiday of their own in the restaurant on level one, or level up your sips and snacks and let the rooftop views steal the show.

Regardless of where you decide to plant your butt (hard to go past the allure of the cosy cabanas tho), award-winning Chef Gerhard Spatz has got you covered.

Gerhard has spent the last 35 years refining his craft the world over, he’s now drawing upon his three NSW Chefs Table Gold Award Winner titles and Euro experience to dish up a little bit of magic as Sofi’s new Executive Chef #luckyus.

Prefer to graze the day away?

Settle in upstairs, soak up the views while the likes of the Wagyu slider feat. ala francise, bacon marmalade, roquefort cream or Charcutier w/ country bread and cornichons make the perfect companions for all those cocktails you’ll no doubt be sampling.

For the foodies among us, the restaurant is obvious choice for the full spread experience – make like The Hungry Caterpillar and nom your way through the Chermoula grilled prawns with tahini caper dressing or the Pastured fed steak tartare to start.

Follow with the Dry aged duck – vadouvan spiced duck Mediterranean vegetable gateau, feta, blackberries and you know your tastebuds will be having a quackin’ good time.

Donut skip the desserts either, with the Pink Lady apple tarte tatin – almond frangipane, cinnamon dolloped with ice cream winning our vote (and hearts).

Luckily for, well, anyone with a mouth, the full suite of irresistible sips are available venue-wide, though with one small problem – you’re gonna need to channel your inner kid and bust out the ol’ trusty #eeniemeaniemineymo to figure out where to start (we’d say flip a coin but rlly who even has those anymore?).

We’re really pining for the Strambo, Plantation Pineapple, Yuzu, pineapple, house made toasted coconut syrup, lime, matcha foam and the Tramonto with Never Never Triple Juniper Gin, Rhubi Rhubarb Liquor, house made rhubarb & strawberry reduction, Prosecco, lemon paint also sounds ridiculously ap-peel-ing.

There are also some fun twists and spicy takes on some of the classics like Margaritas (jalapeño!) and Martini’s (fig!).

Come to mention it, the exhaustive drinks list offers up everything from Apertifs through to Digestifs, so no matter the exotic the libations you’re craving, you’re bound to find something to tickle your fancy #cincin!

Aviary Rooftop Bar, Southport (image supplied)
Aviary Rooftop Bar, Southport (image supplied)

If Queensland weather doesn’t shout rooftop bars at you in a high-pitched squeal, we don’t know what will. Our climate, coupled with the amazing hospitality scene here in our city, means these open-air meccas of good times and delicious libations are the prime place to find yourself — any time of the year! It’s all about drinks in the sunshine and snapping selfies with picturesque backgrounds for Insta-bragging purposes.

So, in honour of bars in high places, here are 14 next-level rooftop bars (listed north to south) you should prioritise visiting this weekend, next weekend, and the weekend after…

Aviary Rooftop Bar
Perched atop Mantra on Sharks, Aviary Rooftop Bar’s views are as stunning as their extensive drinks list. With 180 degree views over the Surfers Paradise skyline and the ocean, it’s the perfect place for an after work beverage or Sunday arvo session with the crew. Ohh and don’t even get us started on their authentic Italian pizzas, and tapas… if you know, you know.

Pretty sure that if it were, in fact, your last night on Earth, you would want to spend it at a sweet rooftop bar with bulk cocktails at the ready. Which maybe isn’t the point of Southport’s Last Night on Earth but a good intro nonetheless. Last Night on Earth is the work of local legend Arran Wollams and his crew. It’s a somewhat underworld themed rooftop bar in the heart of Southport offering good times aplenty. It’s a dive bar, but not as you know it. Check it out.

Justin Lane
A much-loved favourite among locals and visitors alike, Justin Lane is still one of the most popular rooftops on the Gold Coast and was actually the coast’s first official rooftop bar opening in 2011! Hard to imagine.  The space is intimate, with booth-style seating overlooking Burleigh and plenty of cocktails to tickle your fancy. Once you’re done slinging back bevvys with the gang, head downstairs for some fair dinkum pizza (it’s so damn good).

The Collective
Everyone’s favourite multi-restaurant establishment, The Collective in Palm Beach, boasts a sweet rooftop bar with epic cocktails for your sipping pleasure. You can also order eats from one of the five menus on offer and watch the sunset over the ocean while you’re at it. We HIGHLY recommend it.

Burleigh Pavilion
This one is straight-up iconic and the vibe is a match. It’s as close to the ocean as you can get with a cocktail before it becomes a safety hazard. You may be closer to Earth for this one, but the view here is arguably the best on the Gold Coast. Soak in the stunning sunshine while mulling over which epic cocktail to try first.

You’ll love this hidden laneway bar long time

Happy Endings, Broadbeach (Image: © 2023 Inside Gold Coast)
Happy Endings, Broadbeach (Image: © 2023 Inside Gold Coast)

Here on the GC we’re a spoiled bunch – and no we’re not talking about the age old stereotype that forever haunts the only children among us #justiceforonlychildren – we’re referring to the the untold options for fun that basically smack us in the face anytime time we leave the house.

We know we’re preaching to the choir here, so we’ll cut to the chase with an admission that’s a little difficult to cough up – that the one thing our southern rivals, ahem – friends, have over our superior Queensland lifestyle is the late night eats scene leaves us.. a little wanting.

Shibuya Crossing, Happy Endings, Broadbeach (Image: © 2023 Inside Gold Coast)
Shibuya Crossing, Happy Endings, Broadbeach (Image: © 2023 Inside Gold Coast)

Enter Happy Endings, who have taken the recipe for success from Broadbeach’s darling laneway bar Fig + Frankie’s, and hit us with the old copy + paste, with a cool Asian inspired twist.

When it comes to a top notch bevvy, the Gold Coast sure know’s what’s up, and with over 15 years experience in the industry, owners Bella & Euan Lovell obviously also know when they are on to a good thing too.

Happy Endings, Broadbeach (image supplied)

So much so, that running joke and a convenient opening in the very same building led to the inspiration to open a second bar.

When a massage parlour above Fig + Frankie’s shut down due to allegations of, er, suspicious activities, it quickly became lore among staff and well, one thing led to another and now there’s Happy Endings for all! By way of a totally legit, luxe new bar, that is.

While we know the cheeky name will make this bar hard to go past, step inside and you’ll be greeted with an atmosphere that will make it equally as hard to leave.

With mood lighting that’s a solid 10/10, the abundance of warm finishes and lush Japanese architectural selections have created an intimate and inviting experience that feels more like you’ve just walked in off the streets of Tokyo. And who doesn’t love a bar with an aesthetic that’s as instagrammable as it’s fare?

Happy Endings, Broadbeach (Image: © 2023 Inside Gold Coast)
Salty Dog and Matcha Espresso Cocktails, Happy Endings, Broadbeach (Image: © 2023 Inside Gold Coast)

Of course the impeccable vibes and Asian influences don’t stop there, as you’d expect they’ve dic-tated the menu too.

Luckily for us, the institution that is the late night kitchen, borrowed from the hospo culture of our Southern states has also formed a big part of the Happy Endings ethos, which can only be considered a win for us all because #hungry #bringbackthemidnightsnack.

Yakitori, Happy Endings, Broadbeach (Image: © 2023 Inside Gold Coast)

The kitchen dream team bring experience from GC dining icons such as Moo Moo’s, Paddock and Elk, so as you’d expect after peeping the menu – #canconfirm it’s a solid 16-way tie between the eats options (and can we just say it’s lucky for the late night kitchen coz it might just take that long to decide).

Nibble your way through the Lotus Root with nori sesame mayo, Chicken or Spicy Mushroom Yakitori or Whisky Cured Salmon with mandarin + soy dressing. Something tells us the Katsu Sando (tofu or pork) and Crispy Rice + Cured Yolk with a kombu marinade will also be on high rotation.

But try to restrain yourself, because we haven’t even got to the cocktails yet and you’re going to need to save some space – if you catch our drift.

When it comes to sips, you’ll be wanting as many Tokyo Drift’s as there is Fast & Furious movies – with wasabi infused mezcal, housemade melon liqueur + pineapple oleo, 100% of surveyed critics (it us, we’re the critics) agree this cocktail is an absolute must-try.

Also, if you’re still thirsty the Wohmango! – vanilla infused gin, mango oleo, lime and Thai basil will convert even the staunchest mango objectors with it’s delightfully citrus-y notes.

There’s also beer on tap, soju, and sake for those who prefer their liquor on the.. harder side.

It’s clear that the Happy Endings crew aims to ensure everyone finishes their night satisfied, and they’ve sure got the unbeatable location, vibe and fare to pull it off.

7 reasons locals love Surfers Paradise

Once upon a time we left holidaymakers to their own devices in arguably the GC’s most famous beachside suburb, but off the beaten path – well to be fair, some are still very much on it – locals have been keeping these gems all to themselves for a little too long if you ask us. That’s right, Surfers Paradise is more than a postcard-perfect destination, it’s a lifestyle locals love to embrace, because why should we leave all the fun to the tourists! So now we’re here to spill the beans on all the reasons locals can’t get enough of Surfers Paradise.

For all-in-one spots
Surfers Paradise does convenience like a pro with destinations where you can shop, eat, and play all in one spot. Paradise Centre is a beachside fave with a mix of fashion, food, and fun, right at your fingertips in the heart of Cavill Mall. Just a short stroll away you’ll find Soul Boardwalk where laidback vibes met beachside dining and retail therapy aplenty – because what better way to get the food digesting than with a shopping moment.

If an urban escape is more up your alley then pop on over to Chevron Renaissance for all your boutique shopping needs, whether it’s a bite to eat, to grab groceries for the week, a new fit for that special event or a pedicure pamper moment your wish is their command. The two hour free parking is also a big drawcard!

All-you-can eats
If you’re in the market for a buffet that’ll bowl you over then you’ve come to the right place because at this point buffet should be Surfers Paradise’s middle name.

Locals know that they’ve got the buffet game locked down so if you’re up for eating so much seafood you’ll need to unbutton your pants to fit in another plate then Citrique at the JW Marriott has your name all over it.

Just down the highway you’ll find a bustling international market that dreams (and hungry bellies) are made of with QT Gold Coast’s iconic Bazaar Marketplace experience.

Edging on the cusp of neighbouring Broady, Horizon Sky Dining might have pretty much everything on the menu but what about revolving panoramic views of the Gold Coast? They’ve got those two and we’ll take a plate of both thank you very much.
