Forget a penny, how about scoring $500 for your thoughts?

Got big ideas about our great outdoors? The City of Gold Coast is all ears.

Gold Coasters, does whiling away the day by the water really float your boat? Bait your hook? Shred your barrel? We don’t want to rock the boat, but if you love to recreate in and around our superb assortment of waterways, we need to have a sea-rious chat. The future of our city depends on it!

Our Coastal Lifestyle, City of Gold Coast (image supplied)
Our Coastal Lifestyle, City of Gold Coast (image supplied)

To ensure our green (or, enchantingly crystal blue) spaces continue to surpass our discerning lifestyle demands, the City of Gold Coast is asking you to have your say on the future plan for our bounty of beaches, canals, lakes and foreshore parks. And in exchange for your 2c you have the chance to win one of five $500 EFTPOS gift cards. In addition to, y’know, the knowledge that you’ve made an invaluable contribution to the future of our glorious and ever-growing city. Go us!

Considering the way in which our coastal areas consistently deliver the goods (obligatory #DayForIt #How’sTheSerenity) – it’s easy to forget the fact there’s a massive amount of scheming and strategising involved in keeping our outdoor areas humming along like a well-oiled motorboat.

Our Coastal Lifestyle, City of Gold Coast (image supplied)

There’s no denying that we Gold Coasters are beyond spoiled by a certain (spectacular, if you ask us) standard of recreation, and in order to ensure our city’s crowning jewels continue to evolve with our growing needs, the City of Gold Coast is casting a wide net by inviting us all to have our say through the 2024 Our Coastal Lifestyle campaign.

When you think about it, few things are more synonymous with our way of life than spending time by, in or on the water. Where would we be without our iconic beaches, birthday parties and Sunday barbies spent sizzling snags by the water, or the simple pleasure of wetting a line while sinking a cold one? Up the creek without a paddle, that’s where! Ergo, we can all agree that protecting our highly sought-after lifestyle at all costs should be a matter of the utmost priority!

Our Coastal Lifestyle, City of Gold Coast (image supplied)

If that doesn’t already have you hook line and sinker, lest we remind you that this is the chance for the fabulous people of the GC, to give our governing body a glimpse at how we use our pivotal foreshore spaces and waterways. And not only that, but the way in which we want these spaces to look, feel and function moving forward, and for the future generations. We told you this was sea-rious business, guys!

It’s this invaluable knowledge that allows movers and shakers like subject matter experts, key coastal stakeholders, City staff and Councillors to make key decisions that shape our city’s vibrant landscape. In addition to securing investment to effectively manage our coastal areas for the next 10 years and beyond. Basically, they’ll take care of business so we can get back to basking and creek hangs. V important stuff.

So, we’re in agreeance? Let us all jump on the survey bandwagon and put our brilliant minds together to ensure that our grand city continues to be a one stop shop for the best things in life. To have your say and your chance at a $500 EFTPOS gift card, go here.

A free live music event that’s sure to be a clef-hanger!

Lyric (image supplied)

Ahh the GC. There’s so much to love and don’t we know it. There’s the usual suspects; blissful beaches, heavenly hinterland, awesome attractions, and sunshine for days – 365(ish – give or take a dash of El Niño). Heck, even Margot Robbie grew up here and if that’s not a flex…

But there’s another reason why our hometown is the duck’s nuts and that’s the ever-growing festival and events culture. Leaning into this, City of Gold Coast supported by Live Music Australia (an Australian Government Initiative) has announced the ultimate FREE ticketless pop-up music event, Sundown. Celebrating our homegrown muso’s, Sundown is coming to Southport on Saturday 25 May and yep, it’s a no-brainer for us.

Buttered (image supplied)
Buttered (image supplied)

Is this a family event? Yes. A Gen Z, Gen Y, and a boomer event? Yes, yes, and more yes, so grab your granny, partner, besties, and ankle-biters and get ready for a variety of music taking you from arvo to evening. Add a generous helping of tasty eats, sensational sips from Carafe Wines and Young Henry’s, colourful art, AND markets, and you’ll have memories to last a lifetime.

Kicking off in Nerang Street from 2pm, the live music line-up is lit, starting with headliners The Rions and Hope D.

The Rions (image supplied)
The Rions (image supplied)

If The Rions are good enough for Sam Worthington to express his heartfelt love for their tunes, then #sold. Citing influence from Arctic Monkeys, Dayglow and The Beatles, they’ve carved out their own sound scoring some 13 million streams worldwide and yes, we said million. Their catalogue includes the Unearthed High winning ‘Night Light’, ‘Anakin’, ‘Disassociation’, ‘Sadie’, ‘Head Still Hurts’ and ‘Halfway Out’, and we are all-the-way-in to see them live and loud at Sundown.

Hope D (image by James Giles)
Hope D (image by James Giles)

Brissie singer/songwriter and indie pop/rock powerhouse Hope D couldn’t be more ‘headline act’ worthy if she tried. Performing at several festivals including Splendour in the Grass to a legion of fans, she’s supported Boy & Bear at Fortitude Music Hall, co-wrote with close pal G-Flip, and taken out Queensland Music Awards in 2020 and 2021.

Jem Cassar-Daley (image supplied)
Jem Cassar-Daley (image supplied)

Another must-see is indie-pop siren and two x 2024 QMA winner Jem Cassar-Daley. Named ‘the star to watch’ last year by the Queensland Sunday Mail, has taken centre stage with Thelma Plum and sounds like the love child of Missy Higgins, Angus and Julia Stone, Joni Mitchell, Carole King, and Phoebe Bridgers.

Other equally epic acts include singer/songwriter and producer Lyric, who recently took home two coveted awards at the Gold Coast Music Awards, and opened the mainstage of the SPRINGTIME Festival. Described as a cross between Olivia Rodrigo and Billie Eilish, she’s basically a musical Pegasus.

Chutney (image supplied)
Chutney (image supplied)

Also appearing is Buttered, as well as Chutney and no, we’re not listing off condiments. Buttered, formed by duo Scott Dalton and Jackson James Smith, took out Breakout Artist of the Year at the Gold Coast Music Awards in 2022, they’ve had audiences in a chokehold with their soulful sorcery at the likes of Bluesfest and Hidden Lanes.

Sounds from Chutney are spicy, hot, and saucy – just like, well, chutney. Mixing world music with a dash of klezmer, a splash of funk, some middle eastern vibes, not to mention shmultz and the odd blues nod, this awesome foursome is a true treat for your ears. Up the Chut!

DJ Cory Hotline (image supplied)
DJ Cory Hotline (image supplied)

And if you’ve been to a supersized event with a cracking DJ, chances are it was Cory Hotline. Forever a crowd favourite, he’s set to do what he does best and that’s spin a kaleidoscope of bangers to get everybody shaking what their mama gave them.

Not ready to go home when the event winds up? Good, you don’t have to, because the many OG live music venues in Southport are ready and waiting to pick up right where Sundown left off.

So block out your calendars and go here for more info, or check it out on FB.

Is it just us, or does Gold Coast life go perfectly with a barbie? And no, we’re not referring to the plastic blonde haired variety (also, we kind of are…), but rather the beer in one hand, snag in the other kind. With over 380 public BBQs in our region, that’s one for precisely every day of the year + 15 days and challenge accepted!

Here are 12 idyllic spots to meet your mates for a BBQ, outside of your very own back yard of course! Let’s take it from the north….

Tipplers
If you grew up on the GC, you’ve heard many-a-story about this place! The iconic Tipplers now offers a super relaxed atmosphere, epic camping, a fab café (#cocktailoclock), a playground, and of course, BBQ’s! Frolic on the sand, set up some beach cricket and eat BBQ tucker till your heart’s content. Find a friend with a boat or book a ferry and check.it.out!
