Gold Coast Open House

12-13 October 2024

Gold Coast Open House has launched its 2024 program, set to open the doors of more than 25 iconic buildings across the Gold Coast region over the weekend of Saturday, October 12, and Sunday, October 13.

This free event will showcase the city’s vibrant history, architecture, and design, offering residents and visitors the chance to explore the architectural gems that shape the Gold Coast.

A special screening of Sue Thomson’s documentary Undercover will be shown on Thursday, October 10 at Homeof the Arts, as a prelude to panel discussions on Sunday, October 13, about the future of Gold Coast architecture and the potential for change through considered design.

Interactive engagement will be alive across the city with walking tours available in Surfers Paradise and Coolangatta. Children’s activities at HOTA and community architects and builders can lend their skills to help build the city’s skyline around a LEGO replica of the Q1 building at Broadbeach Library, providing a fun, hands-on experience for all ages.

Executive Director Melissa Hoedel says this year, Gold Coast Open House is opening its doors wider than ever before and encouraging the community to get involved in every way possible.

“Gold Coast Open House 2024 is all about getting involved with the incredible design of this wonderful city. Whether it’s getting active with your hands at our activity centres like HOTA and Broadbeach Library, or immersing yourself in our panel discussions and walking tours—there’s something for everyone,” said Hoedel.

“There is some incredible history behind the doors of each building on the Gold Coast. I’m particularly excited by the Sata Nita in Southport. Built in 1936 for one of the city’s most renowned lumber merchants, this Spanish Mission-style building holds so much history and attention-to-detail design.”

“I’m also excited about the inclusion of Robina TAFE in our program. Just two years old, this incredible building is a testament to hands-on learning, with gyms, restaurants, hair salons, and barbers all in-built and designed for education.”

The free event invites design-curious visitors to explore both contemporary and heritage buildings, engage in thought-provoking panel discussions, and participate in activities that celebrate the Gold Coast’s evolving urban landscape.

As part of this year’s program, local architects, venue managers, and community groups have collaborated to provide insights into the city’s transformation and the architectural highlights hidden behind Gold Coast’s doors.
