Tapas, wines, and Spanish Island vibes at El Porton.
Tapas, wines, and Spanish Island vibes at El Porton.
Our prayers for exceptional wine and exquisite snacks have been answered, and delivered to us in the form of a sexy new Spanish restaurant in Benowa. The all-new venue is here, and it’s sending us on a Mediterranean island vacay, minus the long haul flight. We promise you, there’s no better place for a glass of Spanish sparkling and out-of-this-hemisphere tapas than here. Say hola to El Porton!
You wouldn’t be a fool to assume you had just taken a cobblestone-supported seat at a restaurant in Spain itself. The airy and vibrant interior would ruse even a seasoned traveller, and the trickery doesn’t stop there. From the angelachu anchovy brioche with whipped culture butter to the Jamon Iberico Croquette, it’s apparent that no amateur chef was involved and that only a true Spaniard could have conjured such flavours.
The menu oozes authenticity, which is no surprise, given it was crafted in collaboration with genius Chef Ana Cortes Garcia, from Andalucia, Spain, with over two decades of culinary expertise and the president of Eat Spanish. Each dish celebrates Spain’s vibrant culinary traditions, elevated with a contemporary edge. From authentic tapas to innovative Spanish plates, the menu promises to transport you to the sun-soaked coasts of the Canary Islands.
We urge you to arrive hungry as you will want to order one of everything. Start with crispy pan de pipas with salmorejo, Jamon Iberico and piparra. To translate, that’s the most deliciously crisp breadsticks with cold tomato soup, a portion of Spain’s most prized cured ham and sweet chillies. You’re welcome. Don’t miss the crispy piquillo pepper, stuffed with sobrasada (creamy chorizo), goats cheese and palm honey.
Next up, if you’re going to “go to Spain”, you can’t go without trying their most famous fare?! So, the paella de marisco (seafood paella) is a must. Other menu highlights include everything, but specifically their pollo canario; a Canary Islands-style grilled chicken with avocado mojo, patatas fritas and Canarian seasoning. Then, there’s the ‘no convincing required’ leche merengada ice cream sandwich for dessert. We are screaming for this ice cream!
It’s time we introduce you to the most important brains behind it all. Meet restaurateurs, Maria Barona and Pachi Rodriguez. They first delighted us with the traditional Spanish restaurant Encasa in Lane Cove, Sydney. Now, they’re overjoying us with El Porton, their latest venture. The pair relocated to the Gold Coast from Sydney only a few years ago when they realised a gap in the market for Spanish food. We can all guess what happened next…El Porton was born!
To complement the modern Spanish cuisine, El Porton has onboarded two industry heavy-hitters to craft a list of spirited refreshments: award-winning mixologist Sebastian “Cosmo” Soto and Master Sommelier Paul Huet. Take it tapa at a time, and pair them perfectly with a crisp cocktail from their bold and inventive list crafted by Sebastian. Or, sit on a glass of wine (or bottle) from a wine list expertly put together by Paul, which takes you through Spain’s finest wines. We’ll take a bottle!
We think it’s time to call on the group chat- a Spanish island escape awaits!
