The fabulous Amanda Abate is a familiar face in Gold Coast households as the Channel 7 news presenter. Amanda’s love for the Gold Coast city shines through her work and personal life. With a passion for the outdoors, Amanda truly embraces the laid-back coastal lifestyle that makes this place so special. We chatted to Amanda about her journey in journalism and why she loves her job. She also shares a hilarious penguin-napping story that left a lasting impression.

What do you love the most about the Gold Coast?
The lifestyle, which wouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone who lives here! It’s the best. We are so lucky to have wonderful green parks everywhere you turn, beautiful clean beaches and fantastic family-friendly attractions. We haven’t had a proper holiday since the start of Covid and I don’t feel like we have missed out in the slightest. There is so much to do here, plus fantastic warm weather. Every weekend feels like we are on a little family adventure and I’m so happy my kids can grow up in the great outdoors.
I’ve always loved this city, but appreciate it even more now that we have a young family. It’s a thriving place, with top-class schools and plenty of opportunities to work and play.
Tell us a bit about yourself.
I’m pretty driven and was definitely focused on my career for much of my adult life. That’s taken a big shift though, since becoming a Mum. My world is now centred around our two babies, and I couldn’t imagine doing life any other way! We like to keep busy and love the outdoors. Nothing makes me happier than seeing my little ones grow, laugh, and experience all of the magic we tend to take for granted as grown-ups.
How did you get started in journalism and what inspired you to become a news presenter and reporter?
TV reporting was a dream of mine since I was a very young girl. I used to watch the news and then host my own pretend segments! I’ve always enjoyed writing and was born curious. I was the kid who would always ask, “but why?”
I studied Journalism at Griffith University straight after finishing high school and got my first media job at 90.9 Sea FM. I used to drive around in the ‘Sea Cruiser’ giving away free chips and chocolate milks. It was a foot in the door and I ended up working my way into the newsroom. That lead to my first gig in TV, at Southern Cross Ten in Canberra, and from there I moved around a bit, to Lismore, the Gold Coast, Brisbane and Sydney, before landing my dream job back here, as co-anchor of 7 News Gold Coast.
Can you share any memorable experiences or stories that have stood out to you during your time as a news presenter and reporter?
My first big international story was quite memorable. Does anyone remember ‘Dirk’ the penguin, who was stolen from Sea World? I managed to get an exclusive interview with Dirk’s two captors, who bizarrely agreed to share their story. They were Welsh tourists, who broke into the theme park one night on a drunken expedition and ended up taking the penguin back to their hotel. They had filmed it too – so we had exclusive video of poor Dirk, in a hotel bathtub, plus bonus video of the guys dodging security and going for a nighttime splash with the dolphins. This story went global – before ‘going viral’ was even a thing. Fortunately, it had a happy ending. Dirk was safe and returned to the park. As for his penguin-nappers; they got a dressing down in court but escaped any serious punishment. I recall their lawyer, Bill Potts, even wore a penguin tie for the occasion. You just don’t come across stories like that every day… you couldn’t even make that one up!
What do you love most about your job?
The above story highlights how interesting my job can be! The thrill of the chase can be exciting, but also stressful, and sometimes very upsetting. As journalists, we all have to cover stories we don’t want to. But the media isn’t all doom and gloom. I’ve been lucky enough to cover truly remarkable and heart-warming stories in equal measure. Our Gold Coast News is very focused on the community, and I love discovering all the wonderful things going on in our backyard.
I’m also very lucky that we have a fantastic team. We are friends, not just colleagues, and that makes a big difference to workplace morale.
The other bonus of my job – not going to lie – it is pretty sweet sitting in the hair and makeup chair, considering I pretty much live in my active wear and mum-bun all day every day!
What advice would you give to aspiring journalists who are looking to enter the field?
You have to love it. It’s a demanding job, but rewarding for those who are dedicated. The best thing I did was move around. You learn so much from working in different towns and cities, covering all sorts of colourful and interesting stories. You really earn your stripes in the regions. Also, don’t be afraid to ask for advice. I find the rush rush rush of the current 24-hour news cycle means young journalists are often too busy to ask for guidance. When I started out as a junior reporter, I would seek out regular feedback from the seniors, and always wanted to know how I could improve. So, my advice, find a journo you admire and reach out for some mentoring. You’ll be surprised how many are happy to help.

Café/coffee spot: Anywhere with a playground!
Restaurant: As above! We love the restaurants at the Oracle in Broadbeach, as there is a little playground there for our wildlings to run free.
Bar or place for a drink: North Burleigh Surf Club
Beach: Depends which way the wind’s blowing! Any of the sheltered beaches like Burleigh.
How do you choose to spend your days off?
Almost always at a park, with the fam, on our bikes and exploring the city.

How long have you been a Gold Coast local?
After finishing school I moved to the coast in 2001 (My family are from Noosa).
What do you love the most about the Gold Coast?
Hands down the lifestyle. I live for the outdoors and we have the best of it in every direction we turn. But also the people. It’s never lost on me that Gold Coasters hand out smiles so freely. In recent years I’m also loving the emergence of an arts and culture scene – from musicals to festivals!
Tell us a bit about yourself.
From 16 years I was a competitive surfer for Billabong which enabled me to travel the world. Following this I made history as the first ever female surf judge to sit on the World Tour panel. Judging the likes of Layne Beachley and Lisa Anderson. This forged the way for women to participate in determining the world’s best surfers today. After a whirlwind year in 2005 which saw me win Channel 7’s reality show ‘The Mole’, I became a familiar face on Network Seven. These days I present the weather on 7News. The national Live Powerball draws, and on lifestyle shows Creek to Coast and Weekender. In 2016 I got married to Ryan and now my greatest job is as mum to two boys Kit and Fin and daughter Sky, and my dog Bear Grylls. When I’m not working I’m surfing or horse riding!
How did you get started in journalism and what inspired you to become a news presenter and reporter?
Finishing school it was a toss up between studying Marine Biology or Journalism, but I chose the later as my need to share stories and information is hard to suppress! I come from a family of storytellers. My mum was an English teacher and my relatives include camera operators, sports reporters, teachers, writers, authors and journalists. I guess you could say it’s in my DNA! I finished a degree in Journalism at Griffith University here on the coast. I did work experience at all the networks for years, before getting a foot in the door with Channel 7 through my competitive surfing on show Creek to Coast in 2005. I did a course with the Bureau of Meteorology before moving across to weather presenting.
Can you share any memorable experiences or stories that have stood out to you during your time as a news presenter and reporter?
From a news perspective presenting weather during the 2011 Brisbane floods is etched in my mind. I will never forget the pictures and how much impact the information I was sharing had during that time. On Creek to Coast swimming alongside Humpback whales was unforgettable. On Weekender my first time visiting outback Queensland was life changing. Seeing towns such as Winton and the way they live out there opened my eyes to a whole other side of Australia. I loved it!
What do you love most about your job?
Interviewing people. Especially everyday people! I get such a kick out of being able to draw out information and stories from others and then share it! EVERYONE has something to tell if you ask the right questions.
What advice would you give to aspiring journalists who are looking to enter the field?
Be ready to be married to the job for a few years! It’s a hard industry to break into, but if there is no other job option for your soul, if you’re there with passion and love for what you do, you will make it with persistence and a humble ego.

If it’s a weekday and the kids are at kindy/school, I’ll be horse riding with my best mate Tegan in the Gold Coast Hinterland. If I have the family with me then we’re surfing or at the beach and in the ocean in some form! If it’s an overcast day – my boys have me at Pizzey Park!

Broadwater Parklands in Southport will be transformed into a magical realm of 3D lights and wonder with Magic by Moonlight coming to the Gold Coast for the first time this December through to the end of January 2025, with an incredible installation of more than 400 captivating lights featuring more than 30,000 lightbulbs.
Magic by Moonlight Organiser Sam Crocker said Magic by Moonlight is about spreading joy and igniting imagination and crowds can expect larger-than-life experiences that will create cherished memories.
“Visitors will be able to explore an underwater aquatic wonderland with bobbing jellyfish and sea turtles to lions on the prowl in the animal kingdom, step back into a prehistoric world with dinosaurs and a towering volcano to a encounters with colourful fairies and unicorns,” Crocker said.
A portion of all ticket sales will be dedicated to supporting ‘Baby Give Back’ Charity, ensuring attendees not only enjoy a magical evening but also help to give children a safe start to life by providing essential items to families in crisis.

A creative industries precinct is set to take shape on the Gold Coast with legendary local filmmaker Baz Luhrmann’s production company Bazmark providing the City with strategic advice.
Councillors recently resolved to support the establishment of the creative industries precinct which would be located at the City’s Miami Depot site. It is planned that the site, deemed surplus to the City’s requirements, be repurposed to accommodate a mix of creative industries including tech, visual effects, gaming and screen industries, innovation, retail and residential uses.
Mayor Tom Tate said a creative industries precinct would be another boost for the city’s booming screen industry which generates more than $571 million a year for the local economy.
Bazmark relocated their global head office to the Gold Coast and have a pipeline of major productions planned which would generate hundreds of millions of dollars to the local economy.
The reported value add of creative and performance arts to the Gold Coast economy has seen positive trends over the past decade with figures reported showing an annual contribution of over $88 million in 2023. It is estimated that over five years, Bazmark’s pipeline of projects for the Gold Coast would represent a $740 million investment with a forecast of 8,700 jobs.
The news comes at an exciting time of growth for the Gold Coast industry, following the announcement of Shadowbox Studios as the preferred proponent to deliver a state-of-the-art screen production facility at Yatala.

JUJU is the latest offering coming to the space formerly occupied by much-loved Greek restaurant and bar Hellenika. The team behind JUJU have already solidified their hospitality credentials with groundbreaking new venues in Brisbane. And while they are now turning their hand to their first Gold Coast foray, the pair behind it are both Gold Coasters – Trent Redman and Cody Beck.

A new partnership between Queensland Airports Limited and Qantas Group will see the Gold Coast become the most connected Australian city to New Zealand.
Jetstar will operate services from Gold Coast Airport to Hamilton and Dunedin three times each week from June 2025, expanding the airport’s Trans-Tasman connections to six.
The new routes celebrate the recent signing of a long-term agreement between The Qantas Group and Queensland Airports Limited, signaling the airline’s confidence in the destination.
Queensland Airports Limited CEO Amelia Evans said the agreement was a significant milestone, solidifying their partnership and providing significant opportunities for growth across all the regions they serve.

Gold Coast Airport is set to welcome its first connection to Hong Kong in six years, as Hong Kong Airlines launches seasonal services to the city.
The service will run for five weeks over the Chinese Lunar New Year period, delivering approximately 6,000 inbound seats to the Gold Coast.
The new route marks Hong Kong Airlines’ first Australian connection to resume since COVID and will operate four times a week from 17 January 2025 to 15 February 2025.
The services have been made possible with the support of the State Government’s Attracting Aviation Investment Fund (AAIF), Experience Gold Coast and City of Gold Coast.
Queensland Airports Limited Chief Executive Officer Amelia Evans said the service would help elevate the Gold Coast as a destination of choice across key Asian markets.
“We are hopeful the seasonal service will elevate the Gold Coast as a destination of choice in our key markets of Hong Kong and mainland China, and if successful, will translate into longer-term services.
“China has always been a critical visitor market for the Gold Coast and Queensland more broadly, so reconnecting to Hong Kong marks a positive step forward in our international recovery journey.”
Tickets will go on sale via the Hong Kong Airlines Website from next week.

The Gold Coast City budget accelerates plans for HOTA’s $538 million Lyric Theatre. The National Football League has announced it will open an NFL Academy in Australia in September 2024 to service the Asia-Pacific region, as the league continues to invest in long-term global football development efforts and pathways for international talent.
The NFL Academy is a major global initiative by the NFL offering talented student athletes the opportunity to combine full-time education alongside intensive training in American football (tackle) — under the guidance of a world class coaching staff.
“We are excited to bring the NFL Academy program to Australia and the Asia-Pacific region – underlining the league’s ambitions and commitment to grow the sport and the fan base in the market in the long term,” said Charlotte Offord, general manager NFL Australia and New Zealand. “The NFL Academy, alongside the ongoing investment and development in NFL Flag, will not only see more boys and girls engage with our sport, but offers more pathways for young athletes to play the game in the region in the years ahead.”
The NFL Academy will be based at A.B. Paterson College in south-east Queensland on Australia’s Gold Coast, and in partnership with the college will focus on athletic, educational and career pathway opportunities for the student-athletes and the wider community.
Opening its doors in September 2024, student athletes aged 12-18 years old will be eligible to apply for a place in the elite football development program in Australia. The NFL Academy and A.B. Paterson College will support students with the best education and resources, while promoting football performance, player pathways and future collegiate scholarship opportunities.
The NFL and A.B. Paterson College, supported by the City of Gold Coast and the Queensland State Government, will also fund and build an elite high-performance NFL Academy facility on existing college grounds, to be completed in 2026, that will also be available for community use.
This will be the second NFL Academy for the league globally, with the first in the U.K. supporting athletes from across Europe and Africa. More than 40 alumni have secured college football scholarships in the U.S. since its inception with over 30 students set to play college football in the 2024 season, and 19 of those athletes playing in Division 1 college programs.
NFL Academy talent recruitment camps will take place in Australia and New Zealand beginning in June 2024, with successful participants from these trials joining the first academic class of the NFL Academy in Australia. The Tallebudgera Creek glow-up continues with the boardwalk undergoing a $3.4 million upgrade. The boardwalk follows other improvements in the popular beachfront location including upgrades on the nearby training wall and Tallebudgera Creek Park, which was completed in February.
“A new and improved boardwalk will be the final piece of the puzzle in our Tallebudgera Creek upgrades,” said Mayor Tom Tate.
“Tallebudgera Creek is one of the coast’s most popular spots for locals and visitors to enjoy the natural beauty of our city.”
“The improvements are crucial to accommodate a growing number of people and improving safety and aesthetics, as well as reducing future maintenance and boosting protection against erosion impacts from floods, storms and king tides.”
A new 4-metre-wide deck will replace the existing 2 metre boardwalk and new features will include seating, lighting and a viewing platform. The upgrade also includes new landscaping with 30 new trees being planted alongside a range of coastal vegetation. There will be new support piers constructed and a small rock wall added to provide erosion protection.
The boardwalk renewal and upgrade is supported by an Australian Government grant totalling $2,473,650 through the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program.
Work on the boardwalk is taking place Monday to Friday from 7am to 5pm with access along the boardwalk and beach between Tallebudgera Creek Park and dog off leash area temporarily closed. A temporary detour via the Gold Coast Highway and nearby surf club is available during construction.
The Tallebudgera Creek boardwalk project is expected to be completed in August this year.

Gold Coast Airport today unveiled plans to deliver a future-focused precinct with the addition of a retail village, health and wellness hub and conference and tech centre as proposed in its 2024 Preliminary Draft Master Plan.
The document outlines the strategic vision and sustainable growth objectives of the airport and surrounding precinct over the next twenty years, with a more detailed focus on the initial eight years leading up to the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Under the plan, Gold Coast Airport will reinvent itself as a destination within its own right – delivering a reimagined precinct that serves the communities of the Gold Coast and northern New South Wales.
Queensland Airports Limited CEO Amelia Evans said the Master Plan vision is to deliver an airport of the future.
“We want to be more than an airport, we’re committed to creating a mixed-use precinct that would further benefit the local community, with the addition of a retail village, health and wellness hub and a conference and tech centre,” she said.

An all-new Uber pickup zone has landed at Gold Coast Airport, providing a seamless and comfortable experience for arriving passengers.
Uber riders now have access to a dedicated Waiting Lounge inside the arrivals area of the terminal, before meeting their driver directly in front of Gold Coast Airport, outside baggage reclaim. A contemporary, new wedding and events venue, ‘The Homestead’ is now taking bookings. Nestled amongst the scenic backdrop of the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, the venue forms the signature feature of the award-winning attractions’ newest precinct.

Asia’s leading great value medium haul airline AirAsia X today announces the resumption of the popular Gold Coast – Auckland route from 3 February 2024 in response to strong demand.
At the same time the airline will be suspending services on the Auckland – Sydney route from 31 January 2024 to facilitate the new services to and from the Gold Coast.
Queensland Airports Limited Chief Commercial Officer Adam Rowe said the return of AirAsia X’s Gold Coast to Auckland connection would provide more options for travellers.

A new breakfast hotspot is set to open in Nobby Beach’s most anticipated new retail and dining village, with Buoy (pronounce boo-ee) to call The Oxley home from late November.
From the brains behind Burleigh Heads institution Seadog, Buoy will introduce a whole new concept based on the premise of serving locals and beyond with a range of elevated breakfast favourites, focusing on quality produce curated from a hand-selected assortment of suppliers.
Founder Brodie Green was firm on ensuring Buoy took things back to basics, paring back the menu to be less on frills but big on flavour.
“Breakfasts have gotten too complicated because of Instagram, and we think people are over it. Gold Coasters want their classic breakfasts back. We’ll be doing an all day breakfast menu from 5am-5pm.,” said Brodie.
Whether you are after a grab-and-go experience or a full dine-in, Buoy has a hole-in-the-wall section as an ode to the original Seadog that hailed from a vacant ATM space, while also offering a cosy and intimate dine-in space with comfortability at the core of it.

When it came to choosing the right design studio to help them create their first world class Seafood Restaurant -BLOWFISH Ocean Grill + Bar, Steve & Autumn didn’t think twice – they knew it had to be Gold Coast based SPACE CUBED DESIGN STUDIO.
SPACE CUBED Associate Interior Designer Jill Chilton has been the lead on this project and has created an immersive coastal dining experience.
“The interior concept takes a romantic approach to the idea that – “We are all of the sea”. The clients wanted to create an immersive dining experience for their guests, and this narrative is carried throughout the venue through the expression of materials and details that all share a coastal sensibility. Our decisions were largely inspired by the mythical tales of the seductively beautiful creatures that lured mariners with their siren songs, resulting in a serene, yet whimsical dining experience,” said Jill.
One of the unique features of the restaurant is the private dining space – The Ripple Room which is located on the upper floor. In contrast to the sea green, pearly white and sun-bleached timber that adorns the downstairs area, the design The Ripple Room embraces the darker colours of the ocean depths, and the qualities of iridescent fish scales.

A passion project between the two brands and owners Kim Stephen (The Smoking Camel) and Eddie Brook (Brookie’s Gin), the gin is emblematic of the close-knit Byron Bay community, and combines The Smoking Camel’s signature Middle Eastern flavours with Brookie’s expertise in gin making.
The Turkish Delight Gin is made by infusing Brookie’s Gin with the perfect balance of fragrant rose, orange blossom, delicate Meyer lemon and balanced with a touch of sweetness. Off track entertainmnet for October’s Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500 has been confirmed, with seven of Australia’s best live acts to perform over three nights within the track precinct, thansk to a new strategic partnership between Mushrrom Group and Supercars.
The Presets, Client Liaison, Illy, Havana Brown, Mashd N Kutcher, John Course and DJ Total Eclipse will all light up the stage within the race precinct from 27-29 October 2023, as world-class entertainment returns for Queensland’s biggest annual sporting event.
Supercars CEO Shane Howard said: “We saw over 200 thousand fans walk through the gates at last year’s event and we want to break that record in 2023.
“The Club 500 stage will come alive with seven major acts over all three nights of the event, and we can’t wait to get back to our famous Gold Coast street track in October to get the party started.”
All entertainment is included as part of a same day event ticket to the Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500.

From today, Tuesday August 1, Palazzo Versace is now known as the Imperial Hotel, marking the start of a new chapter for the renowned, luxury five-star resort.

Kōst will open in the heart of Broadbeach in August!
A slick, brand-new venue is set to open on the Gold Coast in a matter of weeks! A place where sensory meets the sea. Rustic meets refined. Emily Jade O’Keeffe is a woman of many talents, so it was only fitting that we interviewed the Gold Coast sweetheart ahead of her taking to The Star Gold Coast’s stage from Saturday 19th June this year. We chat about her career, her loves of the Gold Coast and what it will be like preparing for her new role!
How long have you been a Gold Coast local?
I’ve lived here on and off for 18 years now, the last stint has been for the last 9 years.
Tell us a bit about your career to date.
I’ve been working in the media for the last 25 years. I started in Tasmania in radio and moved all around the country for work; from Tassie to Townsville and everywhere in between. My highlights have been launching 1029 Hot Tomato and having a number one Breakfast Show – Galey, Emily Jade and Christo – here for 7 years now. I also launched Nova in Brisbane and was No 1 for 4 years there. Earlier on, I was working on Mornings with Kerri-Anne and with Channel 9 for 5 years. I also wrote during that time for the Courier Mail for a number of years both in print and being one of their first bloggers (when blogging became a big thing) as ‘Emily Everywhere’ which became their most-read blog.
What career achievement are you most proud of?
I don’t have one I’m most proud of, I’ve been happy with every stage and what they all led to each time. My career has kept me busy and happy and fulfilled at every step. I feel really blessed to have been able to evolve and change and grab each opportunity as it came.
Growing up you performed in a variety of musicals and have been described as a self-confessed ‘drama nerd’, what initially drew you to the stage?
Both my grandfathers were performers. My grandad on my mum’s side was very musical and in bands and my grandad on my dad’s side was an amateur actor. That trickled down to both my Dad and Mum. I watched Dad act in local theatre and Mum play piano daily, so I was always around music and drama and I guess it was both nature and nurture in my family. I then continued the tradition but monetised it in the end by making it my full-time career.
What are you looking forward to most about your upcoming role as ‘Tanya’ in the Gold Coast production of MAMMA MIA! The Musical?
It’s come at a time where I needed some healing and fun after a marriage breakdown and as I get used to a new normal and new family dynamic, I really was searching for some light at the end of the tunnel. This gives me a chance to laugh and have fun with new amazing people and do what I love best, which is perform and make people smile.
What is your all-time favourite ABBA song and why?
That’s like asking who is your favourite child – I can’t answer that one. I love them all! ABBA Gold was the first CD I ever got. I got it for Christmas and if CDs could wear out, that one nearly did.
How much preparation goes into playing your part as ‘Tanya’?
I think Tanya is a lot like me, so some parts will come naturally, she’s cheeky, fun but loving and a fierce friend and that’s me. I just need to nail the dance moves and singing, rehearsals start soon so I’ll let you know.

How do you choose to spend your weekends?
I just love keeping it low key with lots of family time with the kids, parents and friends of my kids which involve good cheese and wine in friends backyards or my backyard while the kids play in the pool or run around having adventures, while we chill and chat.
