Angela Simson

5 minutes the Gold Coast Health Coach and Founder of The Gratitude Project. 

She’s a Gold Coast local, loved Australia-wide for her passion project The Gratitude Project, a business dedicated to celebrating the good things in life, every day.

A Health Coach and self-proclaimed Happiness Expert, Angela Simson mentors women to become their healthiest and happiest selves while also running in person events locally.

We chat with Angela about how being grateful for what you have is guaranteed to change your life.

How long have you been a Gold Coast local?
Since I was a toddler!

What do you love most about raising your family here?
Definitely the beach life and healthy culture we have.

Tell us about the work you do?
I work from home in my two businesses, one helping women to become their healthiest and happiest self and my other business is mentoring women to create an income from home using social media!

What do you locally that we can get involved in?
I have an event coming up later this year with my good friend Kate Caddle… it’s a bit of a surprise for now so be sure to subscribe to be the first to know!

How did you come to be in the business of health and wellness?
Through my own transformation, I wanted to become the healthiest version of me so that I could give my babies the best start at life. That journey inspired me to share with other women how good we can actually feel in our bodies and how peaceful we could be in our minds despite the chaos of raising small humans.

What’s so important about being grateful?
It changes your perspective on your life. It’s impossible to feel angry, fearful or frustrated when you put full focus on gratitude.

If you could give one piece of advice to Gold Coasters about healthy living in winter what would it be?
Get out in the sun, it’s not that cold! Vitamin D Is so important and we’re lucky to live somewhere where we have access to it year round.

What are some of the most nourishing foods we can eat when the temperatures drop?
Slow cooked meals are incredible! Easy to digest, full of nutrients and warming form the inside out.

Do you have anything exciting in the pipeline?
Some really fun stuff happening with Kate, we have some huge plans to help women in business and it’s taking over our thoughts right now!

Best piece of live advice you’ve ever received?
To work hard in silence and allow success to make the noise!

Huge activewear sale

5 hacks for a healthier week

No matter how you’re feeling right now or what you’re current situation is, there’s no doubt we can all use a little bit more health and happiness in our lives. So we’ve collected the five top tips to ensure your week is that little bit healthier from now on in. Take care of yourselves Gold Coasters.

Get up an hour earlier
It doesn’t seem like much but you’d be surprised how much you can fit into an hour. There’s nothing worse for your brain than waking up, going to work, going home, watching TV and going back to bed – where’s the relaxation? Instead of reaching straight for your phone the minute you wake up, roll straight out of bed and into some sort of exercise or stretching routine, play with the dog, cook yourself a healthy breakfast and ease into your day. You’ll soon see that starting your morning in a slower, more relaxed way sets the tone for the rest of your day.

Plan your meals
It sounds a little bit like something your Nanna would do but trust us, planning your meals will make life a million times simpler and healthier. Everyone knows what happens when you go to the supermarket after work, usually on an empty stomach and with very little willpower – you end up with an entrée of cheese and biccies followed by garlic bread and a big old bowl of spaghetti bolognaise. Delicious sure, but not so much on the healthy side. Planning allows you to choose healthy options, buy everything you need at once and not be tempted by the lure of excessive carbs.

Sleep enough
Ahh the ever elusive shut eye. It’s highly likely you aren’t getting enough of it what with work, exercising, eating and those all-important Netflix binges taking up so much of your time. Something’s gotta give though and usually that thing is your health, or your sanity. They say you need at least eight hours but in truth, you need as much as you need. If you’re tired, sleep more, it’s imperative to both your mental and physical health (and the people who have to put up with you). If you need a nap through the day, go for it, this is your permission slip.

Take time out
You’ve been hearing people bang on about the miraculous benefits of meditation for awhile now and those people aren’t lying. It is one of the best ways to calm your mind, find out the answers to life’s big questions and generally just take time out from the chaos of day to day life. Seems overwhelming though right? Sitting down in silence and trying not to think. It can be simple though, start with five minutes of deep breathing and don’t be discouraged if your mind wanders, just stay there and enjoy the serenity, before you know it you’ll crave that time out.

Move your body
Although it’s easier said than done to get up off the couch when it’s cold out, the benefits are about three million fold. Even if you just go for a short walk around the block or do some easy stretching, your body will absolutely thank you. There are plenty of online workouts and yoga classes to choose from too so you don’t need to spend money on exercising to see the benefits. Morning is probably the best time of day to move, it’ll make you feel good all day but anytime will do. You’ll be happy you did.

New: Nude Sisters Whole Food Kitchen

The local raw food revolution ramped up over the weekend with the unveiling of Nude Sisters Whole Food Kitchen in Mermaid Waters.

The picture-perfect space is decked out in crisp white with blush accents and plenty of greenery. A hand-scrawled slogan adorns the wall reading “life is short, eat the cake”.

And eat the cake you will once you lay eyes on the stunning creations owners Bec Askey and Georgia Homer are dishing up.

The two are best friends who met at Griffith University and bonded over a love of cooking healthy desserts, the demand for which quickly grew amongst family and friends.

The Nude Sisters dream began once the girls started wholesaling their treats to local cafes then selling at NightQuarter and finally, opening the café to share their passion for wholefoods with the masses.

The all-day breakfast and lunch menus are made up of vegetarian dishes using only fresh ingredients and of course, some of the most beautiful raw desserts you’ve ever laid eyes on (all of which are dairy-free, gluten-free, vegan and refined sugar free).

For breakfast, the Green Brekky Bowl is a winner made up of tossed spinach, kale, broccolini, roasted almonds, avocado, quinoa, lemon, olive oil and a poached egg.

If something sweet is more your style the Fruit Toast comes highly recommended. It’s topped with almond butter, banana, honey, cinnamon and a sprinkle of house made coconut and maple granola.

Stay on for lunch (because you can eat as much healthy food as you like, right) and opt for the San Choy Bao with minced mushrooms, zucchini, celery, carrot, spring onion, coriander and crushed peanuts in lettuce cups.

Pay attention, raw food just got really good.
