Southport scores its very own KatsuCo!
Southport scores its very own KatsuCo!
Ahh Japanese food. Famous for its unique approach to gastronomy with a combo of exotic ingredients and aromatic spices, we can’t get enough.
Plus it looks as good as it tastes and not to be superficial about it, but when it comes to our chow #looksmatter. So when a new Japanese joint opens its doors, we’re among the first to walk on in…or run in this case and let us explain why.
This isn’t just any Japanese-food-slinging spot, this place specialises in Katsu. KATSU PEOPLE!
Bringing a unique food phenomenon to Southport is the one and only KatsuCo.
It’s so good it’ll have you chanting “Oishii!” which means delicious, and this proves we actually listened in year nine Japanese.
So just what is Katsu? It’s a popular Japanese comfort food consisting of a breaded and deep-fried premium cut of meat or seafood, and yes – we had you at comfort food. The protein is then coated in nest panko crumb, lightly fried in oil, and served with Katsu sauce, rice and salad.
Traditionally pork is used for Katsu, but beef, chicken and prawn are also popular and can we have one of each already please and thank you.
Founder and Head Chef Louis Seo knows his craft with two successful KatsuCo nosheries under his belt (one in Sherwood and the other in Northlakes), he chose wisely to bring the KatsuCo experience to the GC.
And where better to set up shop than our melting pot of multicultural goodness Southport, and you know what they say #ThirdTimesACharm.
Louis brings 14 years’ experience as a chef to the table (or rather the kitchen). This includes a stint as Executive Chef at the IHG Hotel Group and training at the coveted Le Cordon Blue cooking school #props. The name KatsuCo comes from “Katsu Company” which seems entirely logical, and is representative of Louis’ expansion into different South East Queensland locations.
Take a seat at one of the 14 indoor tables and get ready for some serious ‘status level: ninja’ katsu. All katsu sets are served with rice, sliced cabbage, katsu sauce, miso soup, pickled vegetables and wasabi so you there is no risk of going home hungry. The best of the best would have to be the Tomahawk Katsu, with fried breaded 350g pork rib eye and truffle olive oil.
Equally popular is the Cheese Katsu, which is mozzarella wrapped with pork loin and honestly anything with cheese is always firmly on our radar.
If don buri is more your cup of sake, then you’re in luck.
The Salmon Don is a popular choice, with aged salmon sashimi, snow pea sprout, rice, signature soy sauce, miso soup and salad.
The Eggplant Don is also a winner winner eggplant dinner, with soy glazed eggplant, rice, miso soup and salad.
And who are we not to make mention of the noodle dishes, aka the Asian pasta and eternal crowd pleaser. Speaking of Italian, the Carbonara Udon is a EuroAsian party in your mouth, with udon noodles, creamy sauce, herbs, and parmesan cheese. Or for something a little more tradish, the Spicy Udon is a delicious cold noodle dish, with soba noodles, spicy chili-based sauce and seasonal veg.
Our overall verdict? Do yourself a favour and experience a restaurant that does its namesake (beyond) proud, and book a meal at KatsuCo. Like, yesterday.
