We chatted with Australian rapper, singer, songwriter and all-round good guy, Illy ahead of his performance at the Cali Beach official Boost Mobile GC500 afterparty. He told us what he loves about being a DJ, the Gold Coast lifestyle and the surprising career path he would have pursued if music hadn’t worked out for him.

Tell us a bit about yourself. (Both professionally and personally)
I’m an Australian musician, started out in the hiphop scene but as my career has gone on, taken turns at electronic and pop music as well. I’m working on my 7th album and am very excited to be back playing shows.

Personally, I love my footy teams (Manchester United & Melbourne Demons), and spending time with family and friends when I’m not in a studio or on a stage. Love a good beer, but my girlfriends been making a pretty good attempt at getting me into wine lately.

You’re performing at the Boost Mobile GC500 After Party at Cali Beach. What can we expect?
Well, our last tour won the Best Live Act ARIA. So, our live show is solid. And we love the GC, so yea, you guys are in for a good one.
Tickets available here.

You perform on the Gold Coast regularly, any favourite venues or events?
I’ve played the Supercars in the past and always enjoyed it.

Best part about being a DJ/Artist?
Honestly, it’s all I’ve ever wanted to do, so I guess just getting to have it as my “job” is just generally the best part. If I had to be specific, touring with my mates. We’ve missed it these last few years and I’ll never take a hungover trip to the airport the morning after a show for granted ever again.

Any pointers for the aspiring?
Work hard at getting better, take every opportunity even if you think it’s beneath you (bring it to your level), and never let other people’s opinions get in the way of your vision.

If you hadn’t become a DJ / Artist what do you think you would be doing now?
I somehow have a law degree. So, I’d probably be a really bad lawyer. Or an aspiring professional Esports player. Or both.

What else is in the works for 2022?
Finishing off my new album and playing a few shows is how I’m ending my year. Couldn’t be happier about both!

What do you love about the Gold Coast?
Everywhere has a personality. No surprise, Gold Coast is just a fun, anything goes, ‘who cares about tomorrow we’ll deal with it then’ kind of vibe. Always has been since I first came up here. As musicians, we relate to that a lot, so we always feel at home.

Do you have any Gold Coast favourites you keep going back to?
Restaurant:
I went to Moo Moo’s last time I was there and that was fire.
Bar or place for a drink: QT has me sorted, Coolangatta Surf Club… that whole area’s dope.
Beach: I love Coolangatta

How do you choose to spend your weekends?
When I’m on the Coast I’m visiting mates, so generally beach in the day, bars and clubs at night, following morning in bed regretting it all, rinse and repeat and go again. To me, that is the Gold Coast lifestyle, who am I not to abide by that?!

The rebirth of events canned or shelved while ‘ole Rona spread her gloom and doom here, there and everywhere continues, and it’s seriously gone from the famine to the feast. Whilst we’re still inclined to sign up for the opening of an envelope to expel those two years of pent-up social nothingness, there are certain events which really get our engines vrooming.

Yes friends, it’s time to start gearing up for one of our most iconic homegrown event supernovas from Friday 28th October until Sunday 30th October, The Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500. No that’s not a typo – it’s now five hunji not six and whilst it may have shed 100kms of track, buckle up GC coz this year’s instalment has only two speeds; fast and faster! We’ve always had epic feels for this event’s solid party vibes and side note, we just realised race car spelt backwards is still race car #mindblown.

For the first time since 2019, the Repco Supercars Championship is bringing us an event entertainment line-up guaranteed to make up for lost time and rev-olutionise the way we celebrate car racing. We don’t want to give away too many ‘spoilers’, but there is more on and off-track action than you can poke a fuel bowser at. Jam packed with frivolity for people of all ages, it’s the Gold Coast’s biggest party yet and you’d be wheely crazy to miss it.

Some of Australia’s hottest DJs and international stars will take to the Club 500 stage on Macintosh Island on all three evenings, ensuring the after dark festivities don’t miss a beat. Get your hip hop on with Bliss n Eso on Friday 28th and boogie the night away with world champion turntablist DJ Total Eclipse. Leave some fuel in the tank though because you’re doing it all again the next night…and the one after that #EatRacePartyRepeat.

Carl Cox, the man synonymous with Ibiza and Eric Powell, the DJ-producer who basically pioneered techno, are bringing their hugely successful Mobile Disco to the glitter strip on Saturday 29th *insert dancing emojis. Then, channel your inner 19-year-old-self for a third consecutive night of trackside partying and no, we don’t care if you’re tyre-d coz the final night is lit.

On Sunday 30th October, naughties icons Sneaky Sound System are headlining, and we saw a UFO and no one believed us either. Add Kota Banks belting out her infectious bangers and bae-town Brooke Evers on the decks, and it will be well worth the Berocca-fest on Monday morning.

But that’s not even the best part, because all entertainment is included as part of a same day event ticket to the Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500 – talk about bang for your buck. If you’re bringing your tribe, there’s more good news with kiddos aged 12 and under scoring free General Admission with a paying adult. This means more in the kitty for official merch, and that’s hubby’s and dad’s Christmas presents sorted right there.

Don’t be that person who leaves it too late to book and misses out, coz that would really grind your gears. Starting at $72 per adult, put yourself in pole position for a long weekend to remember and grab your tickets now.

Now, buckle up for some foodie news we’re Greek-ing out over. Hellenika is making its return to the Gold Coast in a new corporate lounge experience right on the Beach Chicane. Hellenika x Supercars will fill that Zucchini Chip sized hole that’s been missing in our Gold Coast lives for four long years. Think full-day curated Mykonos inspired grazing paired with some of the best seats in the house. This collab has all revved up! You can get more information on the corporate suite offerings here.

16 reasons locals love Coolangatta

Coolangatta is our southernmost suburb and it’s almost like stepping back in time for a taste of the good old Gold Coast, a little slower and sleepier (the way we like it) but with a sprinkle of some seriously epic eats for good measure – dreamy.

If you’re a fan of chill coastal vibes and pumping surf, where you can soak up the sunshine all-day long and hop from beach to bar as your heart desires then Cooly’s got your name written all over it. The laidback lifestyle is just one of the reasons why locals love this little beachside suburb, but we’ve found another 16 for when you want to go exploring.

Franc Jr’s
I’ts called the famous pizzeria for a reason, Franc Jr’s have gotten a rep for dishing up the best pizzas on the Gold Coast – maybe even Queensland. Big call, I know but IYKYK. Home of their signature Sicilian square pizza, pop down for takeaway or dine in with a bottle of pinot to wash down your pizza. Our pick is the red strip with a pickled grape salad on the side (sounds weird but trust the process) and a frozen marg if you fancy a tipple.

Pipi’s Restaurant
Cooly brought in the big guns with Brisbane hospitality mavens, the Gambaro Group bringing Pipi’s to life and it’s something Southern Gold Coasters have been waiting for. Pipi’s is the newest seaside sensation to call Cooly home and you best believe our tastebuds can’t get enough of it. Nothing to be crabby about with a Mediterranean-inspired menu – Chargrilled Mooloolaba King Prawns and Freemantle Octopus Carpaccio just a couple of the stars of the show. If you’re feeling boujee then treat yourself to a Kaviari Caviar Bump – served with a shot of Belvedere or glass of Tattinger.

Special mention to the cafe-style sequel to this suave new seafood nosher, Awaken Cafe. Situated underneath Pipi’s Awaken thos caffeine-slinging counterpart is giving girl-next-door (but, y’know, downstairs) in the very best way.

Kefi
Kefi popped up on the café scene in late 2023 and their suitably summer vibe has been gracing our social channels here, there and everywhere. With coffee and food as delicious as the interiors are gorg it’s the kind of spot we could just spend all morning long at. With a Mediterranean twist on your classic brekky favourites, fuel up with a feed or pop in for the viral strawberry matcha and take a stroll on the beach because, wholesome.

Cooly Breeze
There’s something about being beach side and on a rooftop that just hits different, throw some fine dining into the mix and that’s our kind of trifecta. Executive chef Marcondes Almeida Neto has combined gastronomy with the flavours of the Medierranean Coast for bold flavours you’ve never tasted before. A feast for your eyes and your tum, the dishes are almost too pretty to eat… almost.

Coolangatta Pie Shop
This iconic Gold Coast pie shop has been around for more than 50 years, so it’s no wonder they’re serving up some of the tastiest pies around. We’re partial to a baked good and fortunately, the Coolangatta Pie Shop have them aplenty – perfect for that post surf carb load.

Maverick Hair & Art Studio
If you’ve been looking for a place to tame that mane then say less, because Maverick Hair & Art Studio’s got your back. Or hair, I guess. The award-winning salon and of course, their stylists, know their way around the locks and can we just say – they do one of the best blondes we’ve seen on the GC, and that’s no easy feat. The refined industrial feel is a pretty little paradise to sit back and relax while you’re pampered, which is exactly what you want when you’re investing hours in those tresses – t’s the crown you never take off, after all. No bad hair days here

Bar Evelyn
This place has been a hotspot for locals and visitors ever since it popped up on Marine Parade a couple of years ago. Cooly’s home of antipasto and pasta, you best believe we want a pizza that. Our picks? If you’re a seafood lover like us then the bug bucatini and pickled mussels with bottarga mayo, cucumber and dill are a must try. Sweeten the deal with their house-made tiramisu – do as the Italians do, we say – and one of their season sours.

One thing about us is that we are always down for a Mexican moment. Now let’s taco-bout the margs, specifically the Laneway Marg – just trust us when we say their signature agave inspired bev is everything you’ve been looking for in a marg and more. Taste the flavours of all your fave Mexican fare, or if you’d rather a hands on approach to your dining experience, get the crew together for their signature cooking classes where you’ll get up close and personal with their most-loved recipes.
