O Bagel brings a hole lotta yumminess

Broadbeach's new bagel shop makes the world go round.

Treating your tastebuds to the flavours of the world right here on the Gold Coast has slowly become an achievable thing. We have cuisines from all over the globe represented in eateries throughout the city — and for those with a diverse palate and who appreciate variety, it’s only getting better.

If you’ve ever taken a trip to the states — and in particular, New York City — you’ll have likely encountered, if not eaten your way through, a bagel or two. Often a misunderstood food, the humble bagel hasn’t quite gotten a foothold into Australia as it has with our American cousins. Broadbeach’s newly opened O Bagel is looking to change this, though. With an extensive eight months of trialling recipes in the bag, the visual results look like something you ought to get excited about — and that’s before you’ve even taken a bite.

The easy-going grab-and-go concept is the brainchild of a couple who took a trip to the USA (when the world was a simpler place) and had delicious first-hand experience with these little circles of bready goodness. After seeing and experiencing the hype and adoration for bagels, they knew this was something that, if done right, would be well received back in sunny South East Queensland.

Thankfully for us, O Bagel has painstakingly worked out their bagel recipe to the tee. Offering you the chance to bite into some seriously fluffy savoury and sweet bagels baked fresh every morning on-site and available for you to eat in or takeaway. The core range of six bagel flavours includes the likes of sesame, poppy seed, spinach & cheese with currently 14 fillings available for you to mix things right up. So, if you do the math, that’s over 80 different bagels at your disposal!

Fillings are deftly curated in-house, with every care taken to ensure everything you can order here is as real as it gets. The Classy Lox is stuffed with 48-hour cured salmon, hand-churned soft cream cheese, baby capers, tomato, and red onion. Whereas the popular NYC has lashings of house-made egg salad, wood smoked ham, swiss cheese, and tomato relish. For those with a sweet tooth, enjoy your way through the walnut and fig or blueberry cream cheese fillings — textbook Big Apple eating beside a hot coffee and the morning paper!

Besides producing potentially the best bagels this side of Manhattan, O Bagel serves up an agreeable lineup of cold drinks with cold brew drinks courtesy of Two Amigos Burleigh and an array of iced teas being the perfect drop to sip on a hot afternoon.

Only just recently opened, O Bagel has already garnered red-hot reception from those who have dropped in to try their goods. Perhaps the biggest and best remarks have even come from American customers who have rated O Bagel’s goods. Not sure about you, but we warrant that as some serious praise.

Best clear a space in your diary for your next breakfast catch up and fill it with O Bagel in Broadbeach; you’ll thank us later.

11 of the sweetest Gold Coast bakeries

The Pastry Emporium

Oh baked goods, why do you taunt us so. Taste sensations, tick. Better with butter, tick. Comforting when cold, tick, tick, tick. They’re almost too good to be true but, as demonstrated below, they are true and there are Gold Coast bakeries galore which is just fine by us.

Here’s a list of the top 11 bakeries within which you’ll find said exceptional baked treats and happy carb loading Coasties.

Custard Canteen
By the insanely talented team also behind Bam Bam Bakehouse, Custard Canteen is the newest of the bunch, serving up absolutely next-level Portuguese custard tarts, almond croissant tarts, the gooiest of cookies and various breakfast and lunch goods. Find them down Talle Creek way and good luck floating gracefully once you’ve sampled a few (thousand) of those.
Where: Tallebudgera Recreation Centre, Gold Coast Hwy, Palm Beach

The Pastry Emporium
While it may be a slightly fancier version of the good old fashioned bakery, it is still in fact, a place where goods are baked and some of the most incredible goods you’ve ever tasted at that. Now with two convenient locations, The Pastry Emporium creates magical, almost other worldly cakes and desserts while also whipping up a croissant you would probably die for. They also do the breads and the coffees and if you moved in there, we wouldn’t judge you. Please invite us over.
Where: Shop 2, 90 Markeri St, Mermaid Waters and 4/28 Campbell St, Bundall

And your other minds.

Fosters Bakery
A Nobby’s institution, Fosters has been serving up the baked goods dreams are made of, for many a year. Their pies are some of the best around and we may have been known to indulge for breakfast, lunch and dinner many days running. Classic pastries from Fosters are also always a good idea, there’s vanilla slice, custard tarts and donuts and you should absolutely get one of everything.

Burleigh Baker
For the love of sourdough, this place is the goods. We are quite partial to the olive sourdough, because olives are life but there are many varieties, all of which are the perfect addition to a warming soup and/or lathered with butter. Oh and all their sourdough is of the organic and artisan varieties AND they do incredible cakes like a Raspberry and Pistachio with honey frosting and honey caramel drizzle. Two please.

Horner’s of Sorrento
Horner’s was born from a passion for the smell of freshly baked bread and that is something we can get behind. Their particular type of baked magic comes in the form of artisan breads, from pull aparts to French sticks, and some of the very best sweet treats around. We’re particularly partial to the Melting Moments and the Lemon Meringue Pie, oh yes. We could eat all of these things all of the days.

Broadbeach has long been regarded as one of our wining, dining and shopping. With a number of ‘stayers’ boasting staunch followers for many moons, sprinkled with a hearty helping of shiny new eats and drinks players, nothing can dull the sparkle of this burb’s A-grade entertainer status.

Here are precisely 17 reasons why locals – and Gold Coasters far and wide – love themselves a piece of our much-loved Broady.

Social Eating House + Bar
If you’re a foodie, this is your go-to. A modern Australian sensation, Social has more hats than a Milliner’s workshop. Dracula’s Cabaret Restaurant
If you’re after a tried and tested, long-standing comedic cabaret, good ‘ole Dracs has been serving up frights, food and frivolity since we were all ankle-biters. Most people are sold when they hear there’s a ghost train alone, let alone the actual show (which changes every so often, so there’s always a reason to go back), banquet dinner…and shots in syringes!
Where: Hooker Boulevard, Broadbeach

Aloha Bar and Dining
This tropical hidden treasure is all fun vibes, good food and cracking good times. Popular for its hospo nights, taco Thursdays, karaoke nights, live music and pumping DJs, there’s always something going on here. The tapas always deliver the feels (bao buns…I die!!), the Cucumber and Jalapeno Margi is (too) easy to drink, and we never tire of the super cute fit-out.

Blues on Broadbeach
So unlike our other listings, it may not be here 24/7 but it’s that much of a Broady icon that it would be criminal not to throw it a mention. As the name suggests, it brings us world-class blues and jazz music from locals and famous acts alike, performing across multiple venues over four unforgettable days. And it’s free, and sorry but when does that ever happen?
Where: Various Broadbeach venues

CHA CHA Japanese Restaurant
Gold Coasters have been CHA CHA bound for an authentic Japanese nosh-up which won’t break the bank for years, and that’s not about to change any time soon. The banquet menu is divine and every visit you’ll experience the same level of scrumptiousness. But the soy on the dim sum…it’s BYO and it’s hard to find an already affordable yet high-quality restaurant offering our 3 favourite letters. Score.
