Old Quarter Coffee Merchants are fuelling positive change one brew at a time.

We’ll hook you in by saying ‘they serve amazing coffee’, but there’s so much more to this coffee roastery than a morning kick (though they’ve got that covered, too). Think of Old Quarter Coffee Merchants as a winery cellar door, but for specialty coffee-  a rotating selection of rare and distinctive single origins and blends crafted using various brew methods. So, yeah, they nail the coffee. But it’s not just that. Their mission is what really enriches the experience that they supply.

Straight up, you’re greeted by a warm “welcome to the home of daily happy” on the storefront window- is there a more accurate statement? Inside, you’re met with beaming faces and a minimalist interior that makes you feel at ease in every sense of the word. Well, that’s before the coffee aromas hit your senses. Then you’re dancing. Baked goods by locally loved Well Bread and Pastry fill the cabinet.

If you have yet to go to Hanoi’s Old Quarter, its streets are vibrant and bustling and bursting with colour. It’s also where Old Quarter Coffee’s journey began. Founders Yosir Le Cerf (Yose) and Amelia Hicks (Amy) are seasoned travellers, and Vietnam in particular, holds a special place in their hearts. The name ‘Old Quarter’ was inspired by the ancient Vietnamese city that Yose and Amy found themselves in one night- sharing their passion for travel and coffee, and their dreams to bring about positive change with both.

It started in 2017 with a single pallet of green beans from a K’ho family in Vietnam. Now, Old Quarter is a thriving coffee roaster and trader with a deeply respectful relationship with its Southeast Asian suppliers. Like most coffee roasters (hopefully), they are committed to serving the best brew possible. However, Old Quarter goes the extra mile. They’ve spent the past eight years nurturing relationships with the local Southeast Asian farmers who grow their beans. This direct supplier relationship means they can ensure farmers get a fair price. It also ensures they’re bringing us the best coffee possible (amen to that).

Nowadays, Old Quarter are serving up our coffee fix in Ballina, Murbah, and Southport. They’re set on creating a morning ritual that not only tastes good but feels good and does good. Needless to say they have succeeded in all areas. They’ve brought the rich and diverse flavours of Southeast Asian coffee to Australia (tastes good), and help connect communities through coffee (feels good). We’ve already touched a bit on the ‘does good’, but wait, there’s more.

Did you know Old Quarter is the only specialty coffee company that sources, roasts, and serves 100% Southeast Asian green beans from smallholder farms? Well, now you do. Even their growth strategy is driven by good intentions! For Amy and Yose, the decision to expand to the Gold Coast and Brisbane from their Northern River roots isn’t about money in the bank. It’s about increasing the impact they can have on the lives of Southeast Asia farmers. So, every time you pick up your ‘daily happiness’ from Old Quarter, you’re fuelling a truly magical movement. We’ll take 10!

A slice of HOME in Currumbin

Home Currumbin, Currumbin (Image: © 2024 Inside Gold Coast)
Home Currumbin, Currumbin (Image: © 2024 Inside Gold Coast)

HOME Currumbin isn’t just a place; it’s a feeling and trust us, once you step inside, you won’t want to leave. Located right in the heart of it-girl real estate, Currumbin Industrial, it combines modern Aussie cuisine with a down-to-earth vibe that reminds us of, well, HOME (…but with that super on-trend reno we’ve all been talking about doing for, umm, we’ve kinda stopped counting).

Home Currumbin, Currumbin (Image: © 2024 Inside Gold Coast)
Home Currumbin, Currumbin (Image: © 2024 Inside Gold Coast)

HOME may be a new chapter for the space formerly known as Portside, but it’s already shaping up to be a GC brekky and lunch fave. What really sets HOME apart is the sense of community, thanks to new owners, Sam, Wade, Nic, and Chook. These locals grew up within 5kms of HOME and after taking over from Rob and Bec Tingay in 2024, decided to put their own spin on this much-loved local haunt.

Home Currumbin, Currumbin (Image: © 2024 Inside Gold Coast)
Home Currumbin, Currumbin (Image: © 2024 Inside Gold Coast)

For some fun facts on this awesome foursome, Sam and Wade run Currumbin Surf School, Nic has over 20 years of experience in the restaurant caper (more on him shortly), and Chook is an all-round local legend manufacturing Screaming Lizards surfboards. Sam and Nic both have a keen eye for all-things-design, with Sam previously running bespoke furniture store Parker & Persia with wife Stef.

Diving into the heart of the home (or HOME) – the kitchen – it was an opportunity for menu creator and kitchen designer Nic to really shoot his shot, and…. #bullseye.  A culinary genius, he also runs The Baker’s Bistro in Seminyak and has worked his gastronomic greatness at top dining establishments across Bali and in both London and Copenhagen. Joined by Sous Chef and Lead Kelly Suetugui of GC institution Bam Bam Bakehouse and Pallete HOTA fame), these two were born to plate perfection together.

Home Currumbin, Currumbin (Image: © 2024 Inside Gold Coast)

The brunch-to-lunch menu at HOME is designed to hit the sweet spot between 8am and 2pm, with something for everyone. Think approachable modern Aussie classics with an international gourmet glow-up.

You’ll find classics like Eggs Your Way and a B&E roll for those after easy-going options, but the real magic happens when they take familiar dishes and give them a unique twist. Think Potato Hash and Chunky Avocado Toast elevated with house-made condiments like romesco sauce or a charred red pepper and sesame sambal. In fact, all condiments, dressings, and pickles are made in-house, from the char siew sauce on the popular Banh Mi to the harissa folded into lemon tahini, showcased in dishes like the Falafel Wrap.

With a restaurant-level approach to produce and preparation, they’re delivering café-style dishes that are homemade, fresh, and perfect for everyday eating.

And if you’re wondering about the drinks (of course you are), let’s just say you’ll want to raise a glass (or three) to the bevs on offer.

A special shout-out must go to their signature sip, the Limencello Spritz, which is as refreshing as a dip in the Currumbin surf. It’s perfect for cooling down after you’ve spent an afternoon soaking up the sun, or just soaking up the vibe in the recently shushed-up outdoor terrace which seats up to 40 hungry and thirsty peeps.

Speaking of vibes, the interior is a whole mood, with Sam creating a space that’s both modern and cozy. Picture a calm, peaceful spot where you can settle in, catch up with friends, or just pretend you’re working while aimlessly scrolling the gram with a St Ali coffee in hand. The colour palette (tasteful ivory, olive, and earthy tones on the inside, with the perfect combo of sage and terracotta hues outside) and eclectic design pay homage to Currumbin’s heritage, with imagery reflecting the area’s roots.
