9 reasons locals love Biggera Waters

Big in offerings means bigger love for it!

Ahh Biggera Waters – you just keep getting bigger(a) and better every year. With a hearty mix of shopping destinations, eats spots and watering holes, there’s a lot to love in this up and coming ‘burb. Perched in a great location just a stone’s throw from the picturesque Broadwater, it boasts just the right balance of a slower-paced lifestyle and fun entertainment options.

Here are just a few reasons why the Biggera locals have big love for their community and surrounds, and why the cool set from the south are starting to pay attention to their northern neighbour.

White Oat Distillery
As a suburb, you know you’ve ‘arrived’ when you get your very own distillery pumping out top-notch gins! The ‘Covid baby’ of three GC mates, White Oat has quickly become a destination in itself. With award-winning distiller Tudor Duxbury’s fresh take on classic tastes, an on-fleek fit-out, and ‘wise but cool with a hint of old school’ vibe, it’s a must-visit.

Harbour Town Premium Outlets
I mean, this place needs no introduction. Home of designer discount shopping and hello, Eats Street which seriously houses one of the most epic eating and drinking precincts on the GC (#HiCrafty’s), locals and tourists alike continue to flock here in droves. With outlets galore including Kookai, Sass and Bide, Coach, Mimco and Sheike, you’ll also get a free workout lugging your haul to the car!

Metro Market
Whether you’re after some fresh essentials to deck out your pantry for the week ahead, a caffeine hit, café feed, takeaway meal, facial or even a cute new outfit, Metro Market has all that and a bag of chips (literally). Known as the Biggera Waters ‘local’, it even houses GC meat institution Cav’s Butchery, making it a bona fide banger (and mash…)!

Black Hops II
Ahh Black Hops. What’s not to love and the answer is nothing. The runaway success of the original Burleigh Black Hops spurred the unveiling of this upscale production brewery and large taproom. With 16 beers on tap, trivia on Thursday nights, and food trucks Thursday to Sunday, round up your mates, the fam and even your pooch for some award-winning amber ales.

Dublin Docks
Sitting on the banks of Biggera Waters, the Dublin Docks Tavern has been a local favourite for years, with Harbour Town and Dan Murphy’s next door (win-win!), it’s the perfect place to catch up with the crew for an Irish-inspired feed, a few bevvies on the deck, and to let the kids burn off some steam in the indoor playground.

Sushi Train
This is one of the GC’s OG – and biggest – Sushi Trains, and is still considered by many to be the ‘roll’ model for its brother and sister stores in the region. The chorus line of “Irasshaimase!” rings even louder here! Chances are the awesome sushi chefs will know your order after just one visit, guaranteed to ‘maki’ your day!

The Café GC
Ok, while it’s technically not in the suburb of Biggera Waters it is on the outskirts, and you better believe the locals still love it. If you’re channeling a tasty brekky, juicy burger and a Toby’s Estate Coffee with a car wash, this one is for you! The staff here are so friendly and will make sure every visit is as exceptional as the last. The best part though, when you book your car in for a wash you get a FREE coffee! What’s not to love?!

8 reasons locals love Hope Island

Locals of Sanctuary Cove, Hope Island (image courtesy of Destination Gold Coast)
Locals of Sanctuary Cove, Hope Island (image courtesy of Destination Gold Coast)

One of the most sought-after canal frontage suburbs on the GC, there’s more to Hope Island than golf courses and an optimistic name. Positioned north side, just far enough away from the CBD to have an outta-town vibe but not too far if you want to head into the action, it has a resorty feel entirely unique to the 4212 postcode. Umm, possibly because a huge chunk of the residential area is, in fact, an actual resort and yeah, that would make sense.

The community-minded locals are very fond of their burb, and with good reason. Here are eight of the reasons why Hope Island residents are never budging. Like, ever.

Hope Island Links Golf Club & Sanctuary Cove Country Club
Arguably the heart of the Hope Island suburb are the incredible golf courses. And if you’re partial to a spot of golf, you’ve played 18 holes many-a-time at either of these courses. Or if you’re a long-time local, you’ve been to at least 10 weddings at Hope Island Links Gold Club. Which was in fact designed by British Open champion Peter Thomson. ‘The Links’  has consistently ranked in Australia’s top ten resort courses since opening in 1993, and is also a popular choice for functions and events.

There are plenty of options of where to grab a bite and a bevvy, including Destino, Rosé Gelateria, Chim Thai, Dragon Cove, George’s Paragon, The Fireplace and recent newcomers, Pablito’s, and Rise Bakery.  Live like a local and check them out!

Sanctuary Cove Marine Village Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show
While we’re on the topic, Sanctuary Cove also hosts the biggest boating lifestyle event in the Southern Hemisphere. Since launching in 1988, it has evolved into a multi-day extravaganza, featuring more than 300 exhibitors and 600 boats. With over 44,000 attendees, this must-see event gives you a true taste of the fancy yacht life…and locals get pretty stoked when people travel far and wide to enjoy this event on their very own home soil! #braggingrights
