Meet the CEO of City Venue Management.
Now more than ever is the time to support local, and more importantly family-owned businesses. Gold Coasters live smack-bang in the mecca of family-owned and run businesses in Australia, so it’s easy to support some of the best in the biz. One such company is City Venue Management, who operate and manage high-quality, vibrant and well-maintained aquatic, leisure and sporting facilities. And the person at the helm of the company is Reece Rackley. Yes, you may recognise that name, and yes, Reece is responsible for the renowned South East Queensland swim schools, Rackley Swimming, teaching many a Gold Coast family the swim skills for children to enjoy a life-long love of the water. We get to know him and his family history here on the Gold Coast.
How long have you been a Gold Coast local?
The Rackley family have been based around the Burleigh community on the Gold Coast since the early 1940s. However after a 17 year stint in North QLD, my family moved back to the GC to pursue the relaunch of the Burleigh Baths Pool in 1997.
Tell us a bit about you.
My role at City Venue Management is to set and manage the strategic direction for the Company, overseeing all major decisions and departments. Previously a swimming and triathlon coach, I took over the family business in 2004, at that point with just a single swim school in Burleigh Heads. Over the next 18 years the business expanded to where it is today. I have spent time on the board of Australian Leisure Facilities Association and have recently been appointed as Vice President and Board Member of the Australian Swim Schools Association (the peak body for swim schools in Australia). My family involvement in the Aquatic Industry spans three generations, and with that comes an immense ingrained knowledge of how to operate aquatic-based leisure facilities.
As you have always been a Gold Coast family-run business, how has the business evolved over the years?
Well from Burleigh Baths, the business has evolved from a family owned and operated small business in Burleigh Heads to what is now, a company that operates with a much more strategic framework and an incredible team of 1,000+!
You have locations across Queensland, but what makes running a business on the Gold Coast (in particular) so great?
The lifestyle and community these days allows us to operate from anywhere, work-life balance for the staff is very important, and we strive for a positive workplace and engaged workforce, that enjoy what they do.
How is Rackley Swimming superior to other swim schools?
Rackley Swimming is a big advocate of industry collaboration, so we have been active members of the national association and continuously support the industry at large. We are very conscious that the challenge of creating awareness in and around the water is a large task. Rackley Swimming tries to consistently innovate our approach to service, the curriculum and customer experience; and in turn provide great outcomes for our students and their families.
What does a typical day in your life look like?
Generally speaking it’s a pretty regular day balancing work with family / personal time. I have 2 young boys who kick my day off somewhere between 5-6am. I seem to move from breakfast to school to work and back again in a somewhat, robotic process.
How do you define success?
I think I approach my life that I am a father first, husband second and an entreprenuer third. Success means having my priorities in the right order and being able to create an environment where I can enjoy and share success with my family, friends and team.
What are you most looking forward to in 2022?
By nature, I am a people person, and love to travel and adventure. So as the world recovers from the 2-year Covid interruption, I am most looking forward to connecting with friends around the world in person.
What are your Gold Coast favourites…
Café: Tarte Burleigh
Coffee spot: ‘Good Day’ Tugun
Restaurant: Balboa Palm Beach
Bar or pub for a drink: Francies Pizzeria for a glass of wine and a sneaky pizza
How do you choose to spend your weekends?
Generally spending time with the family. Beach, park, at restaurants and getting ice cream! Heven-yah!
