The Fireplace is coming in hot in 2023

Impressive accolades, a refreshed seasonal menu, and the finest local ingredients.

If you look up “high achiever” in the dictionary, you’ll find a simple three-word definition; The Fireplace Restaurant. This award-winning wood-fire dining experience showcases the finest Australian produce infused with smoky flavour from the exclusive wood-fire oven. Garnished with seasoning from the restaurant’s herb garden and expertly paired with a world-class wine library, it’s pure happiness on a plate…and in a glass.

In addition to its endless five-star reviews, InterContinental Sanctuary Cove Resort’s signature dining destination has two major coups to celebrate. Cue the applause, nods of approval, and the sound of people furiously dialling their posse to lock in a Fireplace dinner, because this year is shaping up to be even more impressive than the last.

2022 was undeniably a memorable year for this fine dining power player. Firstly, let’s start with the resort’s appointment of the Dom Perignon of Executive Chefs, Mr Hamish Watt. Joining fellow culinary master, Head Chef Randy Tablan, Hamish’s extensive high-brow experience made The Fireplace truly ‘ignite’ (pun intended). With fanfare and hype galore, absolutely nobody was surprised when the prestigious accolades ensued.  Speaking of new recruits, InterContinental also welcomed a new Pastry Chef, Dee Hettiarachchi, whose pastry prowess and creativity in the kitchen is second-to-none.

With the A-Team fully assembled, naturally The Fireplace took out the top gong at the Restaurant and Catering Industry Association 2022 Awards for Excellence – South East Queensland, named the Best Restaurant in a Hotel/Resort. But that’s not all because in addition to claiming the gold in our region, The Fireplace was also a finalist in the national awards #bravo.

Don’t roll up the red carpet yet though, because more congratulations are in order. Yet again, this fine dining heavyweight was awarded a Two-Glass accolade in Australia’s Wine List of the Year Awards, thanks to the carefully curated 200-strong wine library. This marks the sixth consecutive year of holding such a hotly contended title, and we’ll cheers to that. On repeat….

Looking into 2023, the culinary team are upping the ante even more to keep things exciting and enticing, just the way we like it. They’ve hit reset on the menu to align with the new season and we can already taste the wow-factor. To give your tastebuds a hint of what’s in store, let’s unpack the signature items – hot off the press.

Starting with entrées, the Charred Field Mushrooms with lentils, sauteed spinach and sherry vinegar dressing is simply unmissable. Then, who could resist a main of Barramundi with warrigal, baby corn, sugar snaps, heirloom tomato and salsa Verde and certainly not us. Or, if you’re partial to the grill, the 250g Milly Hill Lamb Rump with a selection of accompaniments and sides is a meat-eater’s dream dish.

Sweet tooths, you haven’t been forgotten with Dee Hettiarachchi’s newest dessert menu including his signature dish: Native Flavours. Featuring fresh Kakadu plum parfait, macadamia nougatine crunch, lemon myrtle sable, Bundaberg infused wild peach marmalade, dry mandarin and fresh berries, there’ll be no sharing because you won’t want to part with a single morsel.

Wine enthusiasts will be tickled pink (red and/or white) to discover that The Fireplace is sharing the  stories of their wine library with a collated series of producer profiles, including Henschke, Bouchard Pere et Fils and Barossa Valley Shiraz. Great news for non-wine drinkers too, because these stories aren’t limited purely to the wine list, with tailored choices across the entire range of beverages, particularly the incredible selection of whiskeys.

The year ahead will also see seasonal menu changes and highly curated special events come to life. Specialist wine dinners, signature dining events and Chef-led experiences are just a taste of what’s to come. Or if you have a special event on the horizon, why not host it in The Fireplace’s intimate Private Dining Room? Seating up to 18 guests, your soiree will be remembered for all the right reasons.

8 Gold Coast restaurants with roaring fireplaces

Miss Moneypenny's interior (image supplied)
Miss Moneypenny's interior (image supplied)

Winter is officially here on the Gold Coast and baby it’s cold outside. When the temperature drops for that hot minute you bet we’re making the most of soaking up the winter vibes, and nothing says winter like cosying up by the fireplace with a glass of red and some of the best food the Gold Coast has on offer. We’ve found the best Gold Coast restaurants with roaring fireplaces so you don’t have to try and flex your fire making skills at home – you’re welcome.

Miss Moneypenny’s
The swankiest fireplace to be found in and around the central Gold Coast belongs to this Broadbeach fine dining favourite. The beautiful decor by renowned designer Paul Kelly Design is an Instagrammer’s dream, but while there is plenty for your eyes to feast upon, the grand-looking fireplace is the real treat here. Treat yourself to any one of their lavish cocktails, or for an authentic winter’s evening experience, grab a whiskey and submerge yourself in a velvet chair stat.

D'Arcy Arms (image supplied)

D’Arcy Arms
Located in the heart of Surfers Paradise, D’Arcy Arms Irish Pub has been serving hearty Irish meals for over 30 years — a testament to their popularity amongst tourists and locals alike. While our winters are just a tad warmer than Ireland’s — ok, a lot warmer — we are still thankful they decided to bestow upon us a crackling, open fireplace to gather around over a Guinness or three. Take full advantage of their fireplace and book your Christmas in July for the full Euro-winter effect. We promise a fireside meal at D’Arcy Arms will soften the blow of missing out on that Euro trip.

The Wine Barrel, Mudgeeraba (image supplied)
The Wine Barrel, Mudgeeraba (image supplied)

The Wine Barrel
It must be said, nothing else makes you feel as warm and fuzzy inside as a glass of wine next to an open fire, meaning The Wine Barrel in Mudgeeraba has seriously got its priorities in order. This tapas and wine bar is a family-owned and run hidden treasure, featuring some of the best tapas and share platters the Gold Coast has seen. So, grab a couple of mates and proceed to devour serious eats, next to the fireplace naturally…
Where: 8/59 Railway Street, Mudgeeraba

The Fireplace
Ok, this one is in the name. Still, the fine-looking InterContinental Sanctuary Cove Resort is home to a restaurant rightly named The Fireplace, and yes, you guessed it: it does indeed have an impressive fireplace within the dining room that is also used for cooking. But don’t just go for the roaring embers; the menu features locally sourced cuisine, a 300-strong wine library and a delightful wine-matched degustation. This is serious date night material, maybe even staying overnight wouldn’t be the worst idea you’ve ever had! There’s even a second fireplace located in the foyer at the Verandah Restaurant and Bar that you can cosy on up to with one of their 50 whiskies.

Panchos
It’s a Gold Coast institution for good reason, nestled in Mudgeeraba is the colourful ‘roadhouse’ style Mexican joint Panchos. It’s been lovingly restored to its former glory by local couple Lachlan and Maddie (the geniuses who brought us Suzy BBQ and TOKOH), holding onto the iconic 80’s character but dishing up a 2023-approved Mexican feast. We’ve pretty much never met a margarita we didn’t like, but something about them tastes even better when there’s a roaring fireplace and live music to keep you snug and beat the Hinterland chill.
Where: 581 Springbrook Road, Mudgeeraba

Shiraz Persian Restaurant
It might be in the heart of Surfers Paradise, but that doesn’t mean they’ve compromised on comfort and cosiness. Enjoy your dinner or date night out in the lantern lit courtyard or sneak a spot inside by the fireplace, either way the home of refined Persian food might just be one of our favourite Middle Eastern restaurants on the Gold Coast (big call, we know),

Nothing says winter warmer like authentic Persian food, and Shiraz celebrates its roots with authentic and flavour rich entrees and mains. The menu has a little something for everyone from traditional skewers to the richest slow cooked stews, as well as a generous range of vegetarian options. We’re all about warming up from the inside out.

Pasture & Co
If you haven’t been to Pasture & Co have you really been to Currumbin Valley? Local, organic and sustainably sourced ingredients are the heroes on Pasture & Co’s menu, and it quite literally caters to everyone (and we mean EVERYONE’s) dietary preferences and cravings. Wholefoods are a hero but if you know a thing or two about coffee, the organic fair-trade brew will blow even the biggest coffee snob away.

Dreaming of a winter dining spot that’s all about ambiance? Tweed River House has you covered. Nestled in a century-old riverside manor, this venue offers chandeliers, pressed metal ceilings and stunning dining room, complete with an impressive open fireplace to set the perfect scene. Savour plates that showcase the finest produce of the Tweed region. During the cooler months, enjoy lunch on the heated river verandah, but come dinner time, it’s all about cozying up by the fire. This is the perfect spot for a long lunch or an intimate dinner, making it a must-visit destination this winter!

12 of the best Gold Coast buffets

Harvest Buffet, The Star Gold Coast (image supplied)
Harvest Buffet, The Star Gold Coast (image supplied)

The history of buffet style eating is a mixed affair. Its origins could be said to hark back to a mixture of cultures — from Asia to Europe. The ‘smorgasbord’ became internationally known as such at the 1939 New York World’s Fair exhibition, because the Swedes had to invent a new way of showcasing the best of Swedish food to large numbers of visitors. And the rest, as they say, is history…

Whoever can claim to have been responsible, we’re not fussed! The point is buffets — and smorgasbords — are amazing ways to reach newfound eating goals, and we’ve got quite a few exceptional ones right here on the Gold Coast. Happy binge eating, folks!

Terraces Restaurant
It’s the seafood buffet extravaganza in Main Beach that locals keep returning to time and time again, and as one of those locals, we can tell you it’s got all of the very best things you’ll love. Yes, fresh seafood galore but also a whole charcuterie section, an excellent Asian dish section, and so many delicious desserts to choose from. Open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Where: Level 1, Sheraton Grand Mirage Resort, 71 Sea World Drive, Main Beach

Harvest Buffet
Not only does Harvest Buffet treat their diners to top-notch eats, but they also allow patrons to feast on glistening poolside views as well. The stunning indoor and outdoor spaces are seriously as enticing as the food, and the private dining room screams “have your birthday/celebration here” and ok, if you insist…Open for breakfast and dinner daily, as well as lunch every Saturday and Sunday so you can get stuck into their famed prawn and oyster buffet, you’ll be sure to leave this place bursting at the seams. We must make special mention of their dinner offering which includes the freshest seafood like oysters, prawns, sushi, roasts from the carvery as well as crowd-pleasers like pizza, pasta, curries, soups and salads. Should we also mention they have a decadent dessert bar? Yep, complete with a chocolate fountain! It’s our buffet dreams answered!

Horizon Sky Dining
Buffet in the sky? No probs. Crowne Plaza Surfers Paradise is where you’re find this gem, nestled above the city skyline so you can (literally) take your dining experience to new heights. Think breathtaking views of the city skyline from ocean to hinterland and of course, the most incredible seafood feast curated by award-winning chefs. They’ve also got vegetarians covered with a huge range of options to make sure every leaves well and truly full. All that buffet-ing is thirsty work of course, so why not treat yourself to an expertly crafted cocktail (or mocktail) to seal the deal. Open for lunch and dinner from Thursday through Sunday.

It’s a quality over quantity affair at Il Barocco, it’s long been a favourite dining spot for buffet lovers for obvious reasons. After all, this is a 5-star luxury property we’re talking about! Not a morning person? Well breakfast up in the clouds might be the closest you’ll get to staying snug in that cosy bed of yours and to be honest, I’d say this brekky is worth the wake up. With all the classics you know and love on offer to build your own big breakfast, seasonal fruits (because, summer) and even cereal if your inner child is begging for coco pops – we won’t judge. And let’s not forget the coastal ambience and live entertainment, satisfying all the senses.
