Ventura to Murwillumbah’s new hard Kombucha brewery.
If a weekend road trip to a brand new brewery to sip something you may never have sipped before, while overlooking a stunning mountain sunset is something you might like to try, we’ve got good news. Ventura Brewing opened a taphouse in Murwillumbah recently and it is Australia’s first craft hard kombucha. A deliciously refreshing tipple that is actually a little bit healthy.
While brewery has occupied the space for awhile the taproom is brand new. The aforementioned mountain views are of Wollumbin (Mt Warning) and the surrounding ranges and sunset over those beauties is truly something else.
Inside, you’ll find shiny tanks filled with all the Kombucha goodness, a polished concrete floor and the industrial, work-space style aesthetic we love about breweries. Throw in plenty of lush plants and warm lighting and the result is a comfortable space to sit and relax with friends while enjoying a few drinks and sunset views.
Outside there are plenty of tables pointed directly at the view, a firepit for the currently chilly nights and usually a local pup or two to make the whole experience even more wholesome. The vibe is welcoming and laidback and everything you want from a destination venue.
Now let’s chat Kombucha. If you’ve never had the pleasure, it’s essentially fermented black tea using a culture of bacteria called ‘the mother’. It’s an ancient probiotic, said to improve gut health, kill harmful bacteria, benefit liver health and help a range of diseases. Plus, it tastes sweet and a little bit bubbly and you can make it pretty much any flavour you choose. Well, Ventura Brewing can anyway.
At the time of visiting they had a repertoire filled with flavours like Ginger and Yuzu (10/10), Elderflower and Cucumber and Hibiscus and Rosemary. Their unique and delicious combinations are designed to open your mind and delight your palate.
If you’re settling in for the afternoon (and you obviously should), why not sample them all? You can fill up a growler with your favourite to take home too.
With 12 taps, there’s an array of options to suit every taste. Craft beers from local breweries, natural wines plus a Lavender Lemonade that was to die for. And, of course, there’s an array of quality non-alcoholic options on offer.
To eat, there are snacks made in-house by Dom like Nachos, Chips and Dip (guacamole and pico de gallo) and house-made Papusa’s with pickled slaw and chipotle cream. Watch this space as there’s a full food menu coming soon.
It’s all the very clever work of two Murwillumbah-born gentlemen Dom Hurley and Shanu Walsh, who had an idea to create something unique, “an ode to better days” as they say, but less idea how to make it happen. They describe their journey as “two old friends with no money and no idea set out to start every man’s dream job – a brewery. A place for crafting the liquid nectar and good times just like in the old brew cave.”
So for the next two years, they practiced and sampled until they created something they like to call “liquid nectar” and opened Australia’s first hard kombucha brewery in their beautiful country town. It’s a sustainable business with a conscious business model that that infuses positive values and ethics into a product that really is unlike anything you’ve ever sipped before.
If you’re a fan of a destination venue that is serving up good vibes, tasty beverages and world-class views in spades, Ventura Brewing is your new favourite Sunday arvo sipping spot. Tell your friends it’s time for a road trip to Murwillumbah.
